Elsie Schichl, 92, of Rixeyville, Va., passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, November 20, 2025.
Elsie was born Elsie Barbara Helena Anderes to Jacob Anderes and Maria Helena Eichner Anderes on December 2, 1932, in Trucksville, Pa., and raised in Dallas, Pa. She graduated from nursing school at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital in Kinston, Pa., and worked in a variety of nursing jobs for decades.
After a whirlwind courtship, Elsie married the love of her life, John Schichl, on November 26, 1955. She supported their growing family while John earned a BS in Electronic Engineering from Northrup University at the age of 34. During their marriage, they lived in numerous states around the country before settling in Rixeyville in 1973. After moving to Virginia, Elsie worked at Culpeper Memorial Hospital while John was employed by IBM in Manassas. They also operated a small beef cattle business in Rixeyville for several years before retirement and spending their winters in Florida. After John lost nearly all his vision in 1990, Elsie became his eyes, helping him learn how to navigate on his own around their home and farm, and driving him to their adventures in retirement from Upstate New York to the Florida Keys and more. Elsie and John's marriage lasted 65 years until his passing in 2021.
Elsie is survived by her daughters, Anneliese Kratochvil (Joe), Heidi DuPree (Robert), Kristi Daly, and Erica Pitzer (Keith); and a son, Hans Schichl (Judy); grandchildren, Melissa Kratochvil, Jennifer Kratochvil Berryman (Rynell), Jonathan DuPree (Cyndi), Monica DuPree (Spencer Smith), Jacob DuPree, Tyler Daly (Riley), Hannah Daly (P.J.
