Paul Rittelmeyer Obituary

Paul Rittelmeyer

Paul Vincent Rittelmeyer, 68, of Culpeper, passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of October 1, 2022 after a brief but brave battle with esophageal cancer. He was surrounded by family, friends, and bluegrass music. Paul was born the fourth of eight children on August 29, 1954 in Memphis, Tennessee to the late Louis F. Rittelmeyer, Jr. and Patricia Hamersly Rittelmeyer.

Paul enjoyed a long career as a librarian with University of Virginia in Charlottesville and retired in 2015. Paul was an avid reader and had a passion for bluegrass music. A banjo player, he enjoyed picking with his buddies on Wednesday nights and at various music festivals across Virginia and elsewhere.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Lori; brothers Mike and John; sister Anita; and niece Martha. He is survived by his brothers Jim (Carol), Fred, Bill (Young-Suk), and Bob (Doug); nieces Felicity (Jason), Alexandra (Jesse), Helen (Tim), Caitlin, Sara (Bill), Grace (Matthew), Kelly (Jordan), and Victoria; nephew Billy; numerous grand-nieces and nephews; and his loyal friend of forty-plus years, Scott. He will be missed by many.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Paul's name to your local library, animal rescue of your choice, or in support of local struggling musicians.

Grew up two houses up Dead Run Drive from Paul. The Cook and Rittlemeyer kids all played together, grew up together, and sometimes got into trouble together. Paul and I were born in 54

Very sad to learn Paul is no longer with us. We were colleagues at the U.Va. Library for about fifteen years, serving together on many committees and project teams. Paul was always a pleasure to work with-well informed, diligent, interested and interesting-with a nice sense of humor. Condolences to family, friends, and his fellow banjo players.
