Thomas Houston Obituary

Thomas A Houston Jr

September 27, 1941 - May 31, 2025

Thomas A. Houston Jr. died on May 31, 2025. His life was filled with a loving family, wonderful friends and a passion for golf. Born in Weatherford, Texas on September 27, 1941. Tom was a self-proclaimed "Army Brat". The son of the late Col. Thomas A. Houston senior and Shirley Houston, Tom traveled the world as a child supporting his dad's career and fostering his passionate patriotism. He graduated high school from St. Andrew's School for Boys in Tennessee in 1959. Tom attended University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he met his wife of 56 years, JoAnn Johnson Houston. He is survived by his children Jenny and Tommy, daughter-in-law, Cherie, and grandchildren Sam and Sally. Tom was predeceased in death by his wife JoAnn in 2018.

Engineering Interstate 64 for VDOT launched Tom's career in the Commonwealth and their young family thrived on Mountain Run Lane where they settled in 1966. JoAnn and Tom lovingly built a home of unconditional love that fostered many great memories for their friends, their children and their children's friends.

Tom was engaged in his community as he served on the Vestry of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and as a Trustee. He was a passionate "Hillbilly" and relished the tournaments and grand trip to Hilton Head each year. He was on the Board of the Culpeper Country Club where professed himself the head counselor of the "Golf Suicide Hotline...will you please hold". Though Culpeper was the base of his extensive golf play, his membership at the Foundry Golf Club in Powhatan Virginia provided another place for comradery and fun. Tom would travel just about anywhere to join friends in the game he loved. For all of those that had the opportunity to play golf with him they left with a lot of laughs and a friend for life.

Tom was blessed to marry Ann duFrane in 2023, an old friend and fellow passionate golfer. Ann's loving support and care greatly enhanced his last years.

Final tributes will be planned for a later date.

Tommy and Jenny, my condolences to you and your families on the loss of your father. Tom and I shared many professional experiences together as geologists and soil scientists. He was always quick with his opinions yet always fashioned with a grin. I enjoyed having him as a friend and colleague. May he rest in peace.

The Houston home was my second home in high school. Mr Houston (and Mrs H) were quick witted and so much fun. I have so many great memories with the entire family. Tommy, Jenny and family I´m so sorry for your loss. Your dad was a memorable man.
