Born in Peoria, Illinois, on February 1, 1954, Dan grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. Following high school, Dan attended Doane College in Crete, Nebraska-the alma mater of both his mother and grandfather. After graduating in 1977 with a degree in music, he began his teaching career in Orchard and later Dalton, Nebraska.
Music was a cornerstone of Dan's life. He played trumpet, flugelhorn, guitar, and piano. He enjoyed performing in the Novotny Polka Band, Pieces Country Band, and several community bands. His passion for music extended to his involvement at church, where he sang on the worship team and served for many years as choir director at several churches, most recently at Zion Evangelical Church, a role that brought him great joy. A man of faith, Dan was an active member of the congregation.
Dan spent over 40 years at George Risk Industries in Kimball, Nebraska, where he rose to the position of Chief Operating Officer before retiring in 2024. His colleagues knew him as a conscientious and devoted employee.
On July 28, 1984, Dan married Martha, recently celebrating their 40th anniversary. He was a devoted family man who cherished time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Dan enjoyed teaching his daughter, Meghan, how to work with tools on various home improvement projects and could often be found puttering about his property, working with numerous machines, and tackling computer projects. When he wasn't tinkering at home, Dan found joy in sailing his many sailboats on the open water of Lake Minatare. As a proud Eagle Scout Award recipient himself, he later became a Boy Scout leader of his son Jacob's Boy Scout troop, helping Jacob receive his own Eagle Scout Award.
Dan was known for his friendly, outgoing nature, inquisitiveness, and dry sense of humor. He could-and would-talk to anyone and everyone, turning strangers into friends. Whether you ran into him at church, at work, or simply around town, Dan was always ready to "shoot the breeze."
Dan was preceded in joining the Lord by his son, Jacob Douglas, and his parents, Donald and Carol (Blatter) Douglas.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Martha; daughter, Meghan (Brett); Albany (Rolando); granddaughters Mika, Amaiya, and Alena; grandsons Tatum, Enrique, and Alec; sister, Peggy (Dennis); sister-in-law, Sarah (Gregg); nieces, Lauren and Mollie; and nephew, Wes.
Above all else, Dan was a good, humble man who will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
