Alfred Luthy Obituary

Alfred Joseph Luthy, 72, of Morris County, N.J., went to Heaven on Aug. 2, 2013, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Family and friends are welcome to visit on Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Tuttle Funeral Home, 272 State Route 10, Randolph, N.J., www.tuttlefh.com. Funeral services are Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Resurrection Parish, 651 Millbrook Ave., Randolph, (973) 895-4224. Al, as his friends and family would call him, was born in Orange, N.J., on Nov. 28, 1940, to Alfred and Agnes Luthy. Al was a proud graduate of St. Benedict's Preparatory and St. Francis University, where he lettered in track and field. He was equally as proud to be a brother to the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity (TKE). Al is survived by his five children, Scott Luthy, Kim Luthy, Glenn Luthy, Carolyn Luthy Bolcar, and Erik Luthy, as well as six beloved grandchildren, who called him Papa. Also surviving are his brother and sister, Kenneth Luthy and Mary Ellen Luthy. Al was proud to have spent his career in publishing in the hotel and travel industry, predominantly in New York City. He traveled the world many times over. He was an avid archer and hunter; he was most happy in the woods. He was also a dedicated runner who ran the New York City Marathon five times. Al had a quick wit and sense of humor that few could rival, which will be greatly remembered and missed. In lieu of flowers, a tribute page has been set up for donation at www.alz.org under Al's name.

I came upon Al's obituary while looking up old friends and colleagues and could not believe that he has passed from this earth. I worked for him at Ziff Davis during his M&C years way back in the 80s. When I suffered through a personal tragedy, I remember him calling me at home to see how I was faring and to tell me to take the time that I needed. He was someone who worked hard and played hard, as most of these messages will agree. More than anything, he was a great father and, should any of his children read this 8 years later, my belated condolences to you.

Papa,
You were always up for a good laugh. Whether you were playing the air sax in the kitchen or sliding from one side of the room to the other on your knees. when I heard papa was coming I always knew it was going to be full of love and fun. This is one of my favorite memories of you, was when Anita, Tori, you and I all went shoe shopping. Having you model all of the shoes and bags we picked out was very funny and I think made every ones day.

This photo was of Dad and I on my wedding day. A selfie I took of us in the Checker Cab on the way to get married. Who knew it would be his obituary picture. I love and miss you very much Dad. I can't believe it's a year. I think of you so much. I hope you can hear me talking to you. I love you and will see you some day.
Love, Snookie

Dad
Zack is lobbying for a cell phone and found yours. He turned it on yesterday and the savvy 10 year old found his way to the pictures. There you were - smiling! Zack wants to keep your phone and your picture with him always. I said to Zack , Papa is with you always! Miss you Dad!!
Love always,
Kim

Al was a great guy. We would discuss our families and he would mention how proud he was of his kids and how well they all got along. He said all the credit went to their mother.
I will never forget an event we had at a very trendy night club/restaurant in Miami Beach. They had Go Go girl cages with bars made of rubber so one could slip in and out. At the time we were there no one was dancing, although there was some rock'n music. One moment we look up and low and behold Al Luthy is in the Go Go girl cage dancing! He made the evening and probably put a dancer out of a job! Al knew how to have fun but was also a professional and a pleasure to work with. He will be missed.

So many great memories with Al during his years in the hospitality business. He was always kind and also lots of fun to be with. We had a ton of fun with Al always joking around and seriously enjoying life and all it had to offer, including his pride in his children!

Al, we met in 1979--you and Melinda hired me and trained me, and created the publishing persona I am. More importantly we became very close friends
whether in the POCONOS when in the non ski seasons you would jog over for blueberry muffins---when we traveled together over dinner we would discuss the strategy of the day and then the topic would turn to Al's 5 children that he loved so much --he anguished over how they were and what he should be doing to ensure they grew up as wonderful, successful young people--Al you achieved ---YEAH
and as an extension of our friendship you were an usher in my wedding to Michael Reardon and also my date at B.K. wedding---what a great dancer.

You were SIMPLY THE BEST- PROFESSIONALLY , AS A FRIEND AND AN AMAZING FATHER WHO WORRIED ALL THE TIME.---YOU WILL BE MISSED BY MANY -B.K.

Sending sympathy and warm wishes to Al's lovely family. Greatly enjoyed Al's vibrancy and sense of fun that bubbled over from him to his loved ones during their "Pocono days." Take care.

I am very sad to hear of Al's passing. I had the privilege to work with him on the hotel books, and to spend time with him later at his home in Llewelyn Park. We also went riding once in Central Park.
He was a witty, engaging, and smart man who brought joy to all who had the pleasure to know him.
Rest in peace, Al

Such sad news to learn of this loss of our friend. Al will be missed by his many friends in Las Vegas along with his many industry colleagues. He was a gentleman, a leader and a friend for so many years. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and close circle at this very difficult time. Rest in peace Al.

My sister and I flew to NY for a weekend and Al gave us his apartment - stocked with champagne for us! Maybe that was to make up for the times he made me pick up the checks when we were out with clients: "I approve your expenses but if I have to expense it, somebody else has to approve mine." Made me approve a $600 bar bill at the Hyatt for Tattinger Champagne. I took that lesson into my management! He was great fun at a party, on a ski slope, or on a sales call (if he was on time!). Wonderful sense of humor. With clients he was always kind of noble. Iconic. Full of ideas and inside knowledge. Clients would listen to his every word. On my 40th birthday, he flew out and scheduled a shipboard business lunch with Princess Cruises to get me out of the house, so they could sneak my mom from NJ to surprise me at my party. He was a great guy, a great boss and a great friend. We'll miss you Al. -

I worked with Al at HTI. I was told I carried on his tradition of being the last one on the airplane before they shut the door! My first sales trip was to the Poconos with Brenna Fitzgerald and we stayed at Al's house. He also loaned Rhonda Craft and me his apartment in NYC oh so long ago to change into our riding clothes for a jaunt in Central Park on Dec 31, had to be in the late 80s. I remember admiring his decorating style. He was a frequent dinner guest at our house in Livingston, and he always had great stories to tell. I remember how he loved to hunt in his backyard in Short Hills. Sending prayers to the family, and the hope that the memories you have comfort you in your time of sorrow. Al was a lovely man with a great sense of style and a love of life. The world was a better place for him being in it.

August 5, 2013

Al was a great guy. He played a mean saxophone, knew how to throw a great party and loved to tell stories of his world travels. He inspired my honeymoon to Cabo saying it was the most beautiful sunset he'd ever seen. I'll forever remember him and Susan dancing at my wedding. May he rest in peace. Shannon Morris

Dad as I woke this morning the sun was rising and I thought of you.
As the sun sets tonight and I close my eyes I will be thinking of you
I will be remembering what you always said, " I am not sleeping I am just resting my eyes"
So when I rest my eyes I will be praying for you. Love you! Kim
