RICHARD HOUSTON Obituary

HOUSTON

Richard Lee Houston II of Forney, Texas, was born September 27, 1975, in Dallas, Texas, to Richard Lee I and Debra Houston. He married Shelley Penn on May 11, 2001, in Dallas.

Richard enjoyed bird watching, fishing, kayaking, hunting, painting, reading, writing, jiu-jitsu, camping, baseball, and listening to old music. He was best known for the 21 years spent as a Mesquite Texas Police Officer. During those years, he received 48 letters of commendation, 2 life-saving awards, 1 police commendation bar, Citizen's Police Academy Officer of the Month Award (August 2018) and a Certificate of Merit in April 2021. He was also a member of the SWAT team for 10 years.

Richard is survived by his wife of over 20 years, Shelley; children, Shelby Houston, Hannah Houston and Lucas Houston; mother, Debra Myers; sisters, Julie Quain, Melissa Frajkor and Dannett Houston; brothers, Kenny Houston, Drew Allen, Zach Houston, Aaron Houston, and Travis Myers.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Lee Houston I.

Richard and I had Algebra 2 together in high school and while we weren't close friends, we were friends and I remember him fondly. He was fun, friendly, outgoing, and was the only noteworthy thing about that class. A genuinely nice guy.

I didn't know Officer Houston but I sure do thank him and the men and women of the MPD. These fine men and women have provided a blanket of safety for me and my family for 18 years. We are truly heartbroken for the loss of Officer Houston and offer our sincerest condolonces to his family and the Mesquite PD.

Richard was what others should strive to be. He was a great friend, a man of integrity, a loving husband, and a brother who set an example for his brothers and sisters. He had a dream and followed it to the end. He will be forever missed by those who knew him. To his family we send our deep condolences and love during this time.
