Betty Bray Covil

Wilmington - Betty Covil age 80 of Wilmington passed away Sunday July 11, 2021.

She was born in Danville, VA on January 31st, 1941. The first years of her life, she spent on a farm, where she learned to tend tobacco fields, raise chickens, and helping her granny with the many chores on a farm, before moving to Wilmington, NC.

Though she grew up a farm girl, she loved to travel to big cities for fun and entertainment. Betty and her sister, Jean, were always on the move, from Las Vegas, to Mississippi or cruising the ocean. She enjoyed sharing her experiences with friends and family as much as they enjoyed listening.

Betty liked showing her love through cooking and giving gifts, along with quality time. Her table was more full than not, with the best southern fried chicken, collards, and other southern delicacies. And like any true southerner, she always had a pitcher of sweet tea in her fridge.

She was a thoughtful person, and her house saw many people under the roof over the years. She was a caretaker in many different ways for friends and family, and never turned down someone who could use a hand.

Betty was a big fan of the NBA and especially her favorite team the Golden State Warriors.

She is survived by her daughter Tammy Winslow and son in-law Ronald Winslow; grandchildren, Aja Holguin, Bryan Sasser, Chad Sasser and wife Whitney; and great granddaughter, Bowdie Sasser.

Sister in-law Awilda Smith and brother in-law Leon Smith, sister in-law Shirley Covil; special friend Lori Flack along with other extended family members and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Rachel Bray; her husband Richard Covil, daughter, Deborah Sasser and a sister, Jean Lancaster.

Visitation will be 2 pm Saturday July 24, 2021 with the Celebration of Life Ceremony starting at 3 pm at Wilmington Funeral Chapel led by Darrell Fulcher and Rev. Ricky Crocker.
