David Byrum Obituary
DAVID LEE BYRUM
HIGH POINT -- David Lee Byrum, 93, of High Point passed away on August 7, 2008 at High Point Regional Hospital following a brief illness. He was born in High Point NC on March 17, 1915, the son of Rev. H. C. and Frieda Badgett Byrum. He was married to Clara Corum on March 17, 1941.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Clara Corum Byrum; three sisters, Dorothy Byrum Hendrix, Mary Badgett Byrum Kearns, and Frances Eugenia Byrum; and three brothers, James Henry Byrum, Robert Mauney Byrum and Lawrence Weaver Byrum.
He and his brother James ran Byrum Cleaners in the 1940's, and later he worked as an appliance repairman for Lambeth Plumbing before going into business for himself as an appliance repairman.
He was a life-long member of Ward Street United Methodist Church, an amateur photographer and a lover of classical music. He was self-educated and never stopped learning and probing mysteries of life and the world. He took great delight in his family, including five granddaughters and four great-grandchildren. His wit and humor brightened many a family gathering.
He is survived by his children, Risë Byrum Kelley, of High Point; Douglas Lee Byrum, and wife, Pat, of LaVonia, Georgia; Frieda Byrum Harrington, and husband, Tom, of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren, Claire Kelley Batts, and husband Jeff, of High Point, NC; Susan Kelley Hicks, and husband Brian Hall of High Point, NC; Martha Claire Byrum, of LaGrange, Georgia; Laura Frances Harrington, of Princeton, NJ, and her friend Lewis Hyatt; Diana Lynne Harrington, of Manchester, CT; and Kenneth Wayne Hicks of High Point, NC; great grandchildren, Caroline Kelley Batts, David Tyson Batts, Grayson Lee Hicks and Claudia Grace Hicks, all of High Point.
A celebration of his life will be conducted at 2:30 pm on Sunday, August 10, at Ward St. Mission in High Point by Rev. E. A. (Sonny) Reavis, Sr. Family visitation will be held at Cumby Family Funeral Service at 1015 Eastchester Drive in High Point on Saturday, August 9, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Ward Street Mission, 1619 W. Ward Ave., High Point, NC 27260.
