George Scott Obituary

GEORGE A. SCOTT George A. Scott passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on December 23, 2020 in Wilmington, NC. He was born on October 11, 1944, the son of William T. Scott and Marie Di Carluccio Scott, in the Bronx, NY. He was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Scott Toolen. He relocated to Wilmington from New York in 2010 and spent some of the happiest years of his life here. George is survived by his wife of 42 years, Judi, also of New York, NY, sons David Scott (Paula) and G. Darrin Scott, both of Wilmington, NC, grandchildren Christina, Kendall, Victoria and Abigail, all of Wilmington, NC, brother William Scott of Riverview, FL, sister Maryanna Scott Hudak of Magnolia, DE, and sister Rita Scott Collier of Bethlehem, PA. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, son, son-in-law, brother, uncle and friend to many. George was a restaurateur for many years: he owned four different restaurants in NY, worked as a manager at Peter Luger Steakhouse in Brooklyn and for the last 10 years has been known to many in Wilmington as the dapper host at the front desk at the Bridge Tender restaurant in Wrightsville Beach; he thrived on the contacts he made with colleagues and customers. He was a recent and avid golfer, enjoyed good food and fine wine, and loved to travel (Aruba and Italy were tops on his list). Music was so important to him; his tastes were eclectic, from Bach and Beethoven to The Eagles and Pink Floyd, with Pink Martini thrown in. George was generous with his time and his person, always ready to help out in any way he could. He was a great host who loved having company come to his home and cooking and baking for them. He had such a good life, just too short; he got to use his gifts and pursue his loves and interests, and make a lot of people feel happy, loved, and looked after. George touched many lives, left so many wonderful memories. Funeral services will be private, on Tuesday, December 29. A memorial service will be planned in the future. Donations in George's memory may be made to Assistance League of Greater Wilmington, 420 Eastwood Road, Unit 107, Wilmington, NC 28403. I remember George as being such a great guy at PHS. He was always there to lend a hand at all the school activities. My condolences to his wife and family. I will miss seeing him at our 60th reunion but we will keep him in our heart.

Such a shame we are all in shock. I always enjoyed his company, so outgoing and friendly and interested in hearing about my life. My opera friends and I always went to the Bridge Tender after the Metropolitan Opera at UNCW and had drinks and good food and conversations with George. Easter times were especially happy. He will be missed by all. Hugs and kisses to all of you his loving family,

Although I have not seen George since our last reunion, I have many fond memories of him since we were very young. My brother, Bill Davenport, and George were friends for a very long time. I also had the good fortune of knowing him in PHS and going to his shows when he sang with his folk music band. He truly loved life and lived it with gusto.

It is almost sixty years since we graduated from Paramus High School in 1962, and George was certainly a wonderful part of our high school years. He attended reunions and enjoyed telling and listening to so many stories! I will miss his daughter! It is sad to think he will not be at our 60th, but his memory will carry on. Our hearts and prayers are with Judi, his family and friends, Wilma and Victor Egg

George was such a trusted friend and companion at the Cape Fear Men's Club!! He and his talents will be much missed. His passion for gourmet dining with the separate "high quality" dining group was educational and inspiring. George will be seriously missed at future events, for his kindness, friendship, and zest for life. I wish the very best to the Scott family during this difficult time.

George was a good friend, excellent chef, superb host with an infectious laugh, and a great story teller. He was larger than life. He will be missed, but his memory will live on in all who knew him.

The last time I saw George was more that 10 years ago. I was in NY for a short trip and I had gone back to Sgt. Garcia on Austin street where I had worked as a waiter when the restaurant first opened in the late 80s. George had already sold the restaurant then, and he just happened to stop by for a drink.

When I saw him walk in, the whole of Sgt. Garcia’s early days came walking back in with him: the sound of his voice, his generous smile, ample gestures, his walk even, but most of all, his warmth. He sat down at our table and, though it had been years since we had seen each others, I felt as if I had never been away. I worked for him for just a few months before leaving New York and going back to France and yet, for some reason (for many reasons, rather) I always felt close to him. He was that place with everything he brought to it. A few things come back to me: his account of his road trips to Tuscany, his love of Italian food, Aruba when it’s cold in NY, Billie Holiday playing often in the restaurant, his Stoli vodka (to this day, I think of him every single time someone serves a Stolichnaya Vodka)

The news of his passing came as a great shock to me because I always thought of him as an immortal . The kind of man who doesn’t age (he already had a full head of grey hair when I first met him more than 30 years ago), a man whose generosity and warmth, sense of humour and positivity stay with you forever.

He stayed with me, so he is, after all, an immortal.

Marilyn and I feel very fortunate to have had George as a friend. He was such a gracious, wonderfully witty and artistic individual. We enjoyed our dinners with him and Judi and always learned something new about cooking and wine! He will be missed by many.
