Marilyn Chalmers Obituary

MARILYN CHALMERS Marilyn Chalmers passed away on January 2, 2016 at UNC Chapel Hill Cancer Center. She was born on October 13, 1949 in Rockville Centre, NY and grew up in Massapequa, Long Island, New York. Marilyn attended Hofstra University earning both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Education. In 1974, Marilyn started working for the Nassau County Police Department initially as a 911 Emergency Operator. In 1995, she was one of the first three women to be promoted to Police Communications Supervisor. She and a colleague developed the 911 training program for new employees and continued as both an instructor and instructional program developer until her retirement. After moving to Wilmington, NC, Marilyn and her husband were volunteers for the food bank, known as Mother Hubbard's Cupboard for seven years. Marilyn is survived by her loving husband, James G. Chalmers; her beloved son, Michael Chalmers; her loving brother, George Ruelius and his wife, Maureen and their children, Kevin and Bryan; her loving sister, Nancy Hewitt and her husband, Martin and their children, Christine and James. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, January 8, 2016 at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel with visitation following the service until 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, PO Box 76, Wilmington, NC 28402 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
