PATRICK ATKINSON Obituary

PATRICK

WRIGHT ATKINSON

Mr. Atkinson, age 33, of Wilmington, NC, died Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at his home.

A funeral service will be held at 4:00PM on Sunday, October 14, 2012 at The Holden Beach Chapel in Holden Beach, NC with Dr John Gray officiating. The family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service.

Patrick was born on November 20, 1978 in Charlotte, the beloved son of Richard "Rocky" and Dulce Atkinson of Holden Beach. He was a graduate of Providence Day School and attended both East Carolina University and Queens College while majoring in art. His passion was painting and his work was promoted by many noted galleries from an early age. For the last 6 years Patrick painted exclusively for Grand Image in Seattle, WA, a major distributor of original art work and fine reproductions to galleries and corporations throughout the United States. His paintings were carried by Pottery Barn, Ballard Designs, Ethan Allen and many other top retailers. When The Drake Hotel in San Francisco recently underwent renovation, Patrick's art played a major role in the design of the guest suites.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two precious sons, Caspian Wright and Lief Gabriel, both of Charlotte, sisters Logan Atkinson from Wilmington and Aubree Sledge and her husband, Edward, and their three children Hayden, Marechal and Simms from Birmingham, AL plus many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Even with success as an artist, Patrick remained quiet and unassuming. He had a strong belief in the Lord and his family takes comfort in knowing he's resting in the arms of Jesus. Patrick was a gentle and loving father who treasured time with his boys and family. We'll all miss his sense of humor, boundless creativity, compassion for the underdog and sweet loving presence.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eagles Nest Regeneration at 4410 Christiansburg Pike in Floyd,VA 24091-2598. Shared memories and condolences may be sent to the family at www.quinnmcgowen.com.

I own one of Patrick's paintings that I purchased from a local art dealer about 8 years ago, (fall trees in a forest) and it gives me such joy. What a talented artist and it sounds like he was also a gentle, funny wonderful person. To all who loved him, I send my belated sadness and hugs.

Patrick was one of my original "art buddies" at PDS. Since my office was right around the corner from Mr. Wallace's room, I was treated to samples of his artistic brilliance on a daily basis. It was fascinating to see someone so young with such great talent, and so much fun to watch Patrick and Sloan push each other to do greater things with their artwork. It is one of my most cherished memories from my time at PDS. I hope your family is able to find some small comfort from knowing he was loved and respected by many.

My days for the last five years have been enriched visually by the works of Patrick Atkinson, as his Art Director, publisher and friend. My spirit has been awakened by his struggle, his commitment, and now by his passing. I will forever be glad I knew him. My hope for his family is that they can find some solace in the knowledge that he is at peace, that the best of him will live on through his work, and his living legacies- Caspian and Lief.

Patrick was one of the most creative people I have ever come across. He had such a gift with his art. I have known Patrick since I was about 5 years old. I had the honor and privilege to work with Patrick as his art agent and publisher for the last 7 years. During this time we at Grand Image were able to see his growth in stature as an artist, achieving astonish
ing artistic and commercial success. But far beyond the business aspect, we were fortunate to get to know Patrick as a person-what a sweet soul he was. We were also honored to be included as part of the family-Rocky and Dulce,Sarah,Caspian, Lief and the Helsers,. Patrick was blessed to be surrounded with all this family love-and to all of you, i know he was very aware of that love. All of us at the extended Seattle family send our very best with love to all of you. Larry Winn

I shed tears last night when I got the news that the world has lost Patrick. He certainly provided much laughter to us during the time he and Daniel were friends. He was a blast. I won't forget how he presided over the "funeral" of Colleen's guinea pig beneath umbrellas in the rain. Although we are now robbed of his great and unusual talents, if we were privileged to know him we have been made richer.
