Richard Plumb Obituary

RICHARD A. PLUMB Richard Arthur Plumb was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on January 16, 1929. He followed his father's footsteps and went to barber school in Cincinnati, OH at the age of 17. Richard cut hair in Fort Wayne, IN from 1949 until 1972 when he was elected President of the Barbers Beauticians and Cosmetologists Union. This victory took Richard and his family to Indianapolis, IN where he created the first of its kind, an advanced barber college. Leading the union in a new direction, Richard merged the Barbers Union with the United Food and Commercial Workers where he assumed an International Vice President position. Richard was dedicated with providing benefits for his fellow barber professionals and devoted his career with creating a pension plan and insurance benefits. In addition to working, Richard loved sports and fitness with his passions for basketball, tennis, cycling, golfing and being outdoors. Richard never tired in sharing this love of sports with his children and grandchildren and often organized many physicals pursuits such as pick-up basketball games, "Plumb bike marathons" and golf outings. Richard was an avid reader and passionate about politics. Richard could carry on a conversation with anyone about anything. He was easygoing and truly enjoyed talking to everyone and anyone. Above all, Richard and his wife Dolores loved being together. They said their secret to their 69 years of marriage, was that they always had fun, through traveling, spending time with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Their passion of working to improve the lives of others was seen through their involvement with the Catholic Church, Handicapped Children and local politics. Richard and Dolores shared a special love and their greatest gift they gave their children was this love and their marriage. Their love will remain eternal. Survivors include his loving wife, Dolores, his children, Debbie, Chris, Matt, Tom, (twins: Mary and Caroline preceded in death), twins: Patricia and Peter, Lawrence, Paula, Sally, and Jennifer, 26 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be held at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 22, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Rev. John McGee officiating. The family will greet friends at the church following the service. Hey Moonman, I think you would be proud of my Mom. She married someone with the same positive attitude that you had. I could not be happier for her. You meant and still mean the world to her. Your impact lives on.

Dodo and family,
So sorry to learn of Dick's passing. He was one of a kind and always made everything fun, even politics. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
We will always cherish the many memories we have from watching your family grow up living in Ft. Wayne to visiting you in NC and the cubbie visits in Arizona.
What a great guy, great love you had for each other and the loving fun productive family you made together.
He was special and we will treasure the memories and laugh at the many stories and his unique humor.
Terribly sorry we can't be there.
A special hello to Patti, and love to all.

Dick, will miss your smiling face and fun loving personality. I'll always remember the fun Dick and I had when we got together on the golf course and the wonderful parties that you and Deloris hosted. Say hello to Dick while your riding your bike around God's beautiful Heaven.

Moonman, you were a one in a million. I am heartbroken that I could never make it back to see you. That will live with me forever. Dodo, I love you so much. You and Moonman created such a huge family with undying love for you both. That love will get you through this.
