Ted Williams Obituary

Ted Lee Williams Sr. passed away unexpectedly Saturday, April 21, 2007, in Spring Hope, NC, at his favorite place, the family farm, Spencer's Trace. He was born November 25, 1931, in Lumberton, NC. He grew up in Wilmington, and graduated from New Hanover High School in the Class of 1950. He was a graduate of East Carolina University and was a proud Pirate. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, John Cleon Williams and Saleima Floyd, his twin sister Bertie Lou, and sister Karen Bell who died in childhood, and his sister Patricia Mae Sheppard. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Mildred Edwards Williams, son Ted Lee Jr. and wife Lori, son Jon Bart; four beloved grandchildren Joseph Lee (Joey), Terren Quinn, Jon Alexander (Jake), and Julia Allison (Julie); his two brothers, Ret. Lt. Col. Floyd Cleon Williams and wife Barbara, and Ret. Vice Admiral James Dale Williams and wife Dorrie; six nieces and nephews and numerous other relatives and friends. Steve Coleman, his wife Jeria, and children Chris and Kayla were special adopted members of the family. Steve was his right-hand man and is the General Manager of Hangers/Williams Cleaners. Ted was affectionately known as "The Chief."
Ted was a faithful and loyal member of Winter Park Baptist Church for over sixty years, where he taught Sunday school, served as a Deacon and on numerous committees. He loved working with youth in sports activities, and many children called him "Uncle Ted" because they felt a special bond with him.
Ted was President of Williams Fabricare, Inc. (DBA Hangers/Williams Cleaners), and ran the business until he retired. He was a leader in the industry, serving on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Association of Launderer's and Dry Cleaners, and as President, Treasurer, and after retirement as a Trustee. With the encouragement of his sons, Ted Lee and Bart, Ted had the prototype for the CO2 method of environmentally friendly dry cleaning, always staying on the cutting edge of the business technology. He was awarded the Plant Design Award by the International Dry Cleaning Assoc. for two of the plants. Ted and Williams Cleaners received the Governor's Award for Arts and Humanities for volunteer work for the Cape Fear Museum. He loved mentoring young aspiring businesspersons and sharing his knowledge with others in the industry. He was on the Board of Directors at Wachovia Bank until his retirement.
Ted started riding a motorcycle five years ago, and enjoyed riding with his special friend, Rev. Clark Rounds. He rode and enjoyed four hours of riding on Saturday, returning to his beloved farmhouse, which he kept beautiful for his family to enjoy. He returned from his ride to his favorite spot on the deck to enjoy the beautiful sunset over the meadow, and that is when he went home from there to be with the Lord.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at Winter Park Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to his favorite charity, the Baptist Children's Homes of North Carolina, P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361-9911, or to the charity of one's choice.
The family is grateful to all who have been his friend and shared in his life. We sincerely appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. His wife, sons, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren will forever love and miss "Our Chief."

Ted Lee, Bart and Mrs. Williams,
I just wanted to let you know that I was thinking of all of you. And though he will be greatly missed he is now with God and is enjoying every moment of it. He was a great man and he meant a lot too me! He stood up for me several times over the years that I knew him. And he always knew what to say to brighten my day! He always knew how to make me laugh. He made a great impression on my life I felt that I was a better person for knowing him.
Love you guys!

Ted Lee, Bart, and Mrs. Williams,

I am very sorry to hear about Ted's passing but I would like you to know that he was well thought of in our family and will always be. He reminds me so much of my granddad, Richard Cannon, and that is a good thing. They were friends for many, many years until my granddad passed. Even then Ted continued to be a good friend to my entire family. He was in cardiac rehab with my mom and I remember her telling stories of how he would tease her yet all the while he loved her as if she was his daughter. After my granddad passed away, Ted would stop by the office to check on us to see if we were doing okay. It was always a pleasure to see him. Sometimes when he was riding his motorcycle, he would stop in for a few minutes to brighten our day and other times he would slow down, blow the horn, and wave. I know that he has impacted a lot of lives, including my family's. He will always be remembered with fond memories. My family and I are grateful for the positive influence that he has had on all our lives.

Dear Mildred, Ted Lee, and Bart:

Our hearts and prayers go out to you, and we also celebrate with you the awesome life that your Father had. Your Family still carries a sweet spot in my life going back to the early days of Lincoln Forest, dirt bikes, football, the trampoline and surfing, and who can't forget the infamous "Bus Stop" ordeal back in 5th and 6th grade. Bart was a hero. Your Father was an awesome man of God and I know his legacy will be continued on through Bart and Ted Lee, just as he would have wanted. May God's peace and comfort be with you at this time.
His Blessings,

Jon Vincent

Dear Mildred, Ted Lee, and Bart:

On behalf of my family, please accept our deepest condolences upon the passing of your beloved husband and father. Al & Peggy are out of Wilmington at the moment but Dad related the sad news in a phone call last night. I have fond memories of our families' friendship growing up on Edgewood Road and playing football, "Army", and all of those things we kids did back then. To this day, I am amazed how the tree house simply appeared in your back yard overnight! It was just another one of those amazing things Mr. Williams did. He was truly an amazing man and his presence will be sorely missed.

Dear Mildred and family, my Mom and Dad told me that Ted has gone home to be with the Lord. We can take such deep and unexplainable comfort in knowing that for those of us whose names are written in the Lamb of God's Book of Life, to be absent from our body is to be present with the Lord, in the twinkling of an eye. And once there, who would ever want to leave His presence and His Glory, Gary

Dear Mildred; Both my heart and my scincerest Prayers go out for all of your Precious Family. I was a WC employee for several years, in the late 70's and early 80's. Working mostly in Suede and Leather. I truly have never worked for or with any person that I have had any greater appreciation and respect for than I did while working for your precous Husband. Please let each member of your Family, Ted Lee, and Bart know that we appreciate each one of them. My Life is truly Blessed by God, having had the deep privilege to both know and work beside such a very gifted and precious man as Ted. Mildred, May God's abundant Love and His inner Peace be felt within your life each and everyday.
