Theodore Humphrey Obituary

THEODORE JACK HUMPHREY II Theodore Jack Humphrey II, age 78, of Wilmington, NC, passed away on June 22nd, 2018, after a long battle with cancer. Ted was born in the Canal Zone on November 19, 1939 to Betty Johnston Humphrey and Theodore Jack Humphrey, who was a Commander in the Navy. He was the oldest of four siblings. Ted attended Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and later graduated from Duke University in 1962, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Ted met the love of his life, Barbara Anne Hoke, while she was studying at Denison. They married in 1964 and moved to New York City. From there they lived in Bethesda MD, Miami FL and then raised their family in Toledo, OH where he spent the bulk of his career at Owens Corning. Ted is survived by his sisters Jo Howard of Northern Virginia and Jerry Stuart of Fort Pierce, FL, his children Katherine Ericsson of Roanoke, VA, Theodore Jack Humphrey III of Wellesley, MA, and Melinda Lee Humphrey of Denver, CO. He was the loving grandfather to Sophie Mae and Jack Emmet Ericsson and Clara Rose, Lea Anne, and Theodora Jane Humphrey. Ted was predeceased by his brother Mark Humphrey and his wife Anne Hoke Humphrey. Ted was a member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio. Ted enjoyed the Royal and Ancient game of golf, especially in his retirement at Porter's Neck in Wilmington, NC. He was a glass blower in his 60's who turned out many interesting and curious objects. While at Porter's Neck, he was also a member of The Erector Club, a group of friends who built a nest for ospreys. During his retirement, Ted also became a Master Gardener and enjoyed spending time with his family. His first grandchild gifted him with the name of Teddy Bear. He was a member of St. Andrew's On-the-Sound Episcopal. He was quite fond of a duff or two on the beach with friends and family. Ted will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and friend. He will forever be our epitome of a gracious and kind gentleman, and in his last few years, a true trooper. Services to be held at later date. I am so very sorry. I was so looking forward to his move to Croasdaile Village. His unit is finally up and ready, and only when I asked our staff when he might be moving in did I learn this very sad news. Ted was such a delight -- a "Southern Gentleman" in every way, thoughtful, creative, insightful, loyal, bright -- and so much more. I am sad that we will not be able to share the many laughs and unending Duke adventures that we had talked about. But -- I am so very thankful for the legacies he left us - his beautiful children and grandchildren, and his friendship. And, I am thankful that he is once more at peace and free from all earthly pain. Love and prayer for all.

Ted was part of a vanishing breed of true gentlemen. His grace, intellect, and easy gentility were hallmarks of everything he did. I am grateful to have had the privilege to know him. He will be missed.

A true gentleman indeed. He always brought a smile to any face around him and worked hard to leave eight legacies that do the same. Lots of love to Teddy Bears family.

Ted was the greatest of lacrosse fans, attending many travel lacrosse events and getting to know the team and many families. My kids and I will remember Teddy Bear fondly!

Compatriot Humphrey,
The SAR recessional is an appropriate statement; Until we meet again, let us remember our obligations to our forefathers who gave us our Constitution, the Bill of Rights, an independent Supreme Court, and a nation of free men. Rest in peace.
