Herbert C Maas

Herbert C. Maas, 99, of La Salle passed away peacefully on February 2, 2023 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria with his three nieces, Pat England, Diana Gapinski, and Marla Szymovicz, by his side.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday at the Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle. Burial will be at Valley Memorial Park in Spring Valley with full military services conducted by the La Salle/Oglesby Veterans Memorial Group. Visitation will be in the funeral home from 9:00 AM until time of services.

Mr. Maas was born on May 14, 1923 to Otto and Ida (Schallhorn) Maas. He served in the 75th Infantry Division in the European Theatre. He was also a prisoner of war, received various medals, and was discharged in 1945. He married Anna Lawless on July 8, 1947, and she passed away on November 27, 1990. He then married Anne B. Moriarity on October 6, 1995, and she passed away on September 18, 2016. Mr. Maas worked at Westclox and then retired from Caterpillar in 1985. He was a lifetime member of the VFW of La Salle and Trinity United Church of Christ.

Mr. Maas is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and his stepfamily.

He was preceded in death by his two wives, two brothers, and six sisters.

Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, his church, or donors choice.

Pallbearers will be Aaron Kelley, Dennis Szymovicz, Brad and Jonathon Gapinski, Aaron Brau, and Leo England.
