Elder Hoyt Simms Obituary

ATLANTA, Ga. - Elder Hoyt Bryson Simms, age 80, died on Sunday, March 20th, 2011, in Atlanta, Ga., after a lengthy illness. He was born in Wildwood, Fla. Jacksonville was his home from an early age.
Elder Simms was called to duty with the United States Marine Air Reserves at the age of 20. He was stationed at Cherry Point, N.C., during the Korean War.
He was ordained to the ministry of the gospel of Christ on June 16, 1958, and served as pastor to the following Primitive Baptist churches: Southside in Jacksonville, Delray Beach, Atlanta, Statesboro, northern Virginia, Lanes at Stilson, Ga., Hardwick at Milledgeville, Faith Chapel in Cordele and, again, in Atlanta. Since retiring in 2005, he has been pastor emeritus to the Atlanta Church, as well as continuing to preach regularly at nearby sister churches.
In addition to these full-time pastorates, he served on the Bible Study Literature Committee for the Primitive Baptist Foundation and as an editor for the Banner Herald, a denominational publication. His love for golf prompted his participation in the beginnings of the Statesboro Preacher's Golf Tournament, as well as service on the board of directors for the Georgia Preacher's Golf Association for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mildred Thomas Simms; a son, Mark Simms; a daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Mike Riggs; grandchildren, Brian Riggs, Laura and Joseph Petitone and David Simms, all of Atlanta; a great-grandson, Lucas Petitone; his brother, Elder Vernon Simms; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at Lanes Primitive Baptist Church in Stilson, Ga., on Wednesday, March 23, at 11 a.m. with Elder Pat McCoy, Elder Emerson Proctor, Elder Vernon Simms and Wade McElveen officiating.
The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
All Primitive Baptist ministers are asked to be honorary pallbearers.
Any memorial contributions may be made to the Primitive Baptist Foundation, c/o Darryl Harris, Secretary-Treasurer, P.O. Box 595, Roswell, GA 30077-0595.
