Bryce DeWitt Obituary


Family-Placed Obituary

Bryce Seligman DeWitt, The Jane and Roland Blumberg Professor in Physics, Emeritus, at the University of Texas of Austin, died of pancreatic cancer on September 23, 2004. He was 81. The family wishes to thank the wonderful volunteers, nurses, staff, and doctors of Hospice Austin for their compassionate care of DeWitt during his final days. He is survived by his wife, Professor Cecile DeWitt-Morette; his daughters and their families: Nicolette DeWitt and Sebastian Swann, Raphael and Ayisha Swann; Jan DeWitt and David DuVall; Christiane DeWitt, Benjamin and Nicolette Arar; Abigail DeWitt and Larry Elworth, Sarah DeWitt-Feldman, Adrienne and Jessica Elworth. He is also survived by his brother, Hiram DeWitt and his family; and by the families of his brothers, Lloyd and Hugh; his cousin, Robert Ramsay, and by Mattie Wright and her family. DeWitt has won many international awards for his contributions to physics. He was recently named as the 2005 recipient of the Einstein Prize of the American Physical Society. A memorial will be held in April 2005 in Tampa, Florida, and Austin, Texas, in conjunction with the award ceremony. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the ACLU.
