Charles Bomar Obituary

BOMAR, Charles L. Another member of The Greatest Generation has passed away. Charles Lorance Bomar, born in 1922 in Vernon, son of Robert and Ruby Bomar, passed away June 3, 2017 at his home in Austin overlooking his beloved Barton Creek. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Laura Lou, in August 2016. Charlie attended Texas Technological College for two years before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He was a P-47 pilot in the Philippines and Okinawa. He finished his military career in 1946 flying P-38s on security missions over Korea. After the war, Charlie returned to Texas Tech and graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering. It was during this time that he married Laura Lou Johnston of Pecos and started working for Texas Concrete Block Company in Lubbock. E.G. Kingsbury purchased the company in 1953 and renamed it Featherlite Corporation . Charlie retired as company President after 22 years with Featherlite. For the next 35 years, he enjoyed various careers as a land developer, water works owner and operator, and real estate entrepreneur. His true passion was his ranch in Uvalde County, which was his home away from home. Charlie enjoyed hosting hunting trips at his ranch for his friends and family until his retirement in 2012. He was an avid hunter who rarely missed, and when he did, it was not his fault . He killed his last mountain lion at the age of 89. Jack Bleakley, Charlie's best friend in life and fellow lion hunter, recently predeceased Charlie. They are now able to hunt lions together again. Charlie was a thoughtful and generous son and friend. As a youth during the depression era, he worked at a grocery store. Every night he would take a bottle of Coca Cola home to his mother. While overseas, he saved his paycheck and sent $30 to his mother in order to purchase a coat for his sister's birthday. He charmed Featherlite into donating land in Liberty Hill to create the Lions Foundation Park. Charlie even convinced the company to donate funds to help with the construction of the park. He also volunteered his time to help the Liberty Hill lSD and the city of Liberty Hill design a sewer system for the school district. Charlie is survived by his children and their spouses, Mike Bomar, Christie and Bill Nalle, Ann and Tom Ferguson, Pat and Dale May; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, his sister Betty Self, his sister? in-law Martha Bomar, and numerous cousins. A joint memorial service for Laura and Charlie will take place on Saturday, June 24th at 9:30 am at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden. (605 Robert E. Lee Road). If you have a story to tell about either Laura or Charlie, we would love to hear it during the service. Charlie had a soft spot in his heart for children who were not as blessed with health as good as his own children and grandchildren. He would prefer memorial donations to Shriners Hospitals for Children - Houston in lieu of flowers. Donations may be mailed to the attention of Jocely Lybrand, 6977 Main Street, Houst on, Texas 77030.

OK, so I'm 64 & I glide thru the obits to see if there is anyone I knew. This guy's face was "pleasant" so I clicked on him to learn more. I know your family will truly miss him. From reading the obit & learning where he lived (one of my favorite places), you can tell he was an interesting character. Im sorry for your loss but dang, y'all are a lucky family to have shared time with him. I would have loved listening to his stories.
