(12/03/2002)Charles D. Maund, affectionately known as ``Charlie'' by his many friends and customers, left this world peacefully on December 1, 2002. Born on February 3, 1927, in Hemphill, Texas, Charlie had made Austin his home since 1957. His wife and best friend, Helen Lang Maund, to whom he was wed for forty-seven years, predeceased Charlie. His loving family of survivors are sons, Doug Maund and wife, Janis, and Mark Maund and wife, Patti; grandchildren, Jennifer and Megan; Erik Maund and wife, Sheri, Lindsey, Adam and Ashley; great-grandchildren, Preston Charles and Hannah McKenzie; sisters, Lillian Cordray, Mabel Sherman, Dorothy Felts and Ann McClain also survive Charlie. Brothers, Harry and Belmont Maund, sisters, Thelma Felts and Wilhemina Crowell, predeceased him. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Charlie's friend and companion of over fifty years, Henry Fontenette. Charlie Maund was the definition of a self-made man. He possessed a sixth sense when it came to business. Starting out with very little at the age of nineteen, Charlie bought and sold used cars for several years before acquiring his first new car dealership in Port Arthur, Texas at the age of twenty-six. Charlie turned thirty in 1957, moved to Austin and opened Charles Maund Oldsmobile-Cadillac. Charlie worked hard and put in countless hours building a thriving business that allowed him to become a multi dealership owner by acquiring a handful of dealerships long before the idea of a ``mega dealer'' came about. Charlie set a multitude of records, received countless awards and accolades in the automobile business. Charlie enjoyed life, loved people and treasured his sisters, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Charlie was a licensed jet pilot, an accomplished sportsman who loved to fish and hunt. He was a Texas rancher and cattleman, who loved spending time at his ranches with friends and family. University of Texas football was a passion; Charlie and Coach Royal were good friends for many years as were many of UT's athletic department staff during Coach Royal's tenure. Visitation is Tuesday from six to eight p.m. at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar. Services are on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Christian Life Church, 4700 West Gate Blvd. with Pastor Rex Johnson officiating. Pallbearers will include Ed Padgett, Dick Mato, Jim Hudson, Jim Fredrick, Chuck Coley, Brian Bailey, Joe Scaff, and Darrell Royal. Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Fontenette, Ron Benson, Dale McConnell, Jack Arledge, and Gordon Lively. In lieu of flowers, donations in Charlie's memory can be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or the Austin Children's Hospital.
