Christian Goetschel Obituary

Christian John Goetschel Christian John Goetschel, 50, of Round Rock, Texas, died suddenly Friday, April 10 in Round Rock. He was born to Dr. John C. and Marlene Goetschel on June 13, 1958 in Woodstock, Illinois. He graduated from McHenry West High School in 1976. After serving in the U. S. Air Force for 4 years, he went on to obtain a BS in Physics, Northern Illinois University; a BS in Electrical Engineering, University of Illinois; a Masters of Electrical Engineering, University of Vermont and a MBA, St. Thomas University, St. Paul, MN. Chris was employed by IBM beginning in 1985 as a micro-circuit designer. He worked in various positions in Burlington, VT, Rochester, MN and Austin, TX. His final position was Vice President for Power Systems and Storage Systems Development. His impact on IBM was significant, leaving behind a long-lasting legacy in IBM products and through his impact on the IBM employees he worked with and mentored. Chris married Mary Lisa (Douglas) Goetschel in Spearfish, SD in 1987. They had two sons, John and Peter. Survivors in addition to his wife and sons include mother, Marlene Goetschel of Johnsburg, IL; sister, Mary Culver; and three nephews, Sean Cavanaugh, David Culver and Clayton Culver of Mukwonago, WI; mother-in-law, Shirley Douglas of Spearfish, SD; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Susan (Douglas) and Loren Steenson; and two nieces, Sarah and Rachel Steenson of Omaha, NE; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. John C. Goetschel and his father-in-law, Henry C. Douglas. Chris will be greatly missed and remembered for his zest for life and his ability to pack three lifetimes into one. He had a heart for service as shown by his extensive involvement with his church, St. John Vianney Catholic Church of Round Rock, where he volunteered in positions of Bible Study leader, RCIA instructor and Pastoral Council member. He participated in Marriage Encounter, Christ Renews His Parish and the Knights of Columbus. Chris served the Boy Scouts of America Troop 157 in many positions including Scout Master. Other organizations where he was a member included the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) and the Austin Cycling Association. Chris' passion was his love for his family which he demonstrated during family camping trips, playing tennis with his sons, family game nights and travel including skiing trips, scuba diving and European sight seeing. He was a voracious reader of all topics, but most notably scriptures and theology. In addition to all of his other activities, he always had time for being with and assisting his many friends. Services were at St. John Vianney Catholic Church of Round Rock on April 15, 2009. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Scholarship Fund for John and Peter Goetschel, c/o Angela Andrews, Amplify Credit Union, 4500 E. Mary Lisa, I was so glad to see so many whose lives were touched by Chris get to join in the celebration of his life. We're going to miss him, but I know he is brightening up a corner (more likely, several corners) of heaven with his smile, his sense of adventure (now so satisfied) and his joy for Life. I've been blessed to know him and I personally will continue to be challenged by his life in my own personal spiritual life, in my career, in Scouting, in family life and in church life. May you take joy and hope in your coming reunion.

Mary Lisa, I worked with Chris and enjoyed his sense of humor and his genuine caring and love of people. He was an inspiration to us all. My love and prayers go out to you, John, Peter, and the entire Goetschel family. We will all miss him. Heaven has a beautiful son home again.

Mrs. Goetchel, Mary, and Families,

Please accept my deepest sympathy on Chris' passing. It was quite a shock to us. Chris is one of the finest human beings that I've ever had the pleasure to call 'friend', and though it's been many years since I've actually seen or spoke to him, I know I will miss him very much.

In the meantime, my wish is for you is that you'll find comfort in the expressions of condolence that you'll be recieving from your relatives, friends, and perhaps people that you had been unaquainted with in the same manner that I took comfort from these expressions when I lost a dear one last year.

While it's been stated so much that it's becomming a cliche, in Chris' case it really is true that our loss is heaven's gain.

You continue to be in my prayers.

Peace.

Dear Marlene, Mary and family,

We hold on to our best memories as a tribute to those who have impacted our lives and as a reminder to live our own lives with zest. I feel privileged to have known Chris through elementary school and high school. You all must be so proud of his vast accomplishments and contributions. I find it so incredibly sad that it is through his death that I reconnect.

My deepest sympathy to all of you as you recover from the shock of his loss. Hang on to the beautiful memories as a constant reminder of his continued presence.

I have had the privilege of knowing Chris since we were in high school. He was always more finished than most of the rest of us. His light in this world will be missed greatly, but the effects of his presence will last a very long time. To his family, words cannot say how I feel. I will continue to keep you in my prayers.

Chris was a great man who will leave a big void. He was a man of faith in action and was always sporting that smile.

I was fortunate to be able to attend the funeral in TX. Over 1100 people came to pay their respects. It was apparent Chris made an impact in the lives of so many. The number 2 guy at IBM took the corp jet to attend Chris's funeral.

Mary Lisa, John and Peter will remain in my prayers; I ask those reading this to consider the same.

This last week Maribeth and I have grieved intensely with and for all of you. Chris was and always will be an important part of who we are, especially Maribeth who knew him since her early teens. The first time I met Chris I was at Northern Lights where he played his guitar and lead worship in our small band of believers on the NIU campus. We had friendship in the Lord as brothers. Though we did not have regular contact over the last couple of decades his occasional phone call or note meant so much to us. We're so grateful we had a chance to spend time with him in October here in Batavia. Chris was the finest of men, especially because of his relationship with Jesus, and his memory will always be cherished in our lives. We continue to pray with heavy hearts but with an expectation of real and supernatural joy of the Lord to return to us all and especially you, his family left behind. Love from Dan and Maribeth.
