Doyle Owens Obituary

Doyle Colbert Owens Doyle Colbert Owens passed from this life to rest in his Savior's arms Saturday, June 4, 2011, at the age of 84. He was born June 24, 1927, in Garland City, Miller County, Arkansas, to Colbert Loam Owens and Lillian Lucille Shelbourne Owens (Reed). In 1945, Doyle entered the US Navy after graduating Bastrop High School and trained in San Diego, California. He served in the Pacific and China theaters of operations and was stationed in the Philippines. He was awarded the Chinese Occupation, Victory, Asiatic Theater, Philippine Liberation and Asiatic Pacific Ribbons. He was discharged in 1946. He married Rachel Lucille Kauffman on October 4, 1947, at Hills Prairie Baptist Church. They had two daughters, Betsy Owens Carpenter and Cheryl "Cherry" Owens Skuttle. Doyle and his family have been active members of the Bastrop community for over sixty years through ranching, retail, education and medical contributions. Doyle was a dedicated member of the Mina Masonic Lodge and received one of only 2 life-time memberships awarded by the lodge for his commitment and service. He demonstrated this same commitment to Bastrop Chapter #64 of the Order of the Eastern Star where he served as Worthy Patron numerous times. Doyle was also a long-time member of Hills Prairie Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Rachel; his daughters and sons-in-law, Betsy and Robert "Bob" Carpenter and Cherry and David Skuttle; his four grandchildren and spouses, Robert "Rob" and Jenny Carpenter, Erin (Carpenter) and Erick Westerholm, William C., Sr. and Jody Dickson, and Chrystal Dickson; and nine great-grandchildren: Owen and Johnathan Carpenter; Emma, Ella, and Eden Westerholm; William, Jr. and Dorothy Dickson, Sabrina Smith and Jolene Colley. Doyle is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Memorial Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home in Bastrop, Texas, followed by a Masonic graveside service at Fairview Cemetery in Bastrop. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your church or to your favorite charity.

ms. rachel i am so sorry this day came. we knew in time it would happen. we love you so much. doyle will be greatly missed. he's in a far better place and is not sick anymore. he was always a happy go lucky man and i am honored to be able to have called him my friend. he always had smile and always so happy to see people and stop and visit. i'll never forget 12:00 sundays if the service ran a tad long a certain way he would twist the cushion on the pew to hint that it was time to close the service. most people just thought it was a creaking pew but us that knew and loved him knew it was 12:00 and time to go. i always said he loved my singing. hope i brought him joy when i sang for him. if i can do anything for you night or day simple call and i'll be there please let me know.
