Dear Betty, Brad, Coley and extended family. I have been away to Kansas attending a wedding and just returned to work today to learn about Gene passing away. I am so sorry for you and the whole family. He was a fine man and I am sure will be missed by many. God will take care of him and he will continue to smile down on his beautiful family. He will see you again in better times. I want to send my condolence to the whole family and I will keep everybody in prayer in this time of your loss.

My Dad
Times like these make me reflect on my life. Too frequently, I think we hurry from event to event and miss the importance of our relationships with others. Times like these remind us how fleeting our time together can be.
Sitting in my parent's study surrounded by pictures and memories of our lives, I've tried to reflect on who my Dad was: He was a son, a brother, a cousin, a classmate, a friend. He was a husband, a father, an uncle, a co-worker, a volunteer, a coach, a grandfather, and a “Papa”.
Each of you have pictures and memories of time spent with my Dad. Thank you for the time, energy, and experiences you have shared with my father because they have shaped who he was.
I've often jokingly said that I was taught by my father to always have the right tool for the job before starting it, because we frequently did not have the right tool before starting jobs while growing up in Liberty Hill. (Looking back, I think these were inadvertent character-building lessons.)
But really, this was the exception to the rule. My Dad and Mom were and continue to be excellent parents and role models.
My father was kind, compassionate, humble, hard-working, sincere, honest, and self-sacrificing. He was patient, loving, slow to anger, and willing to bear the brunt of hostilities without complaining or compromising his values.
He was committed to his community. He loved his family and friends. He was engaging and interested in others.
He didn't scale the lofty peaks, amass great fortune, or garner the highest accolades, but he touched each of our lives and I'm thankful for the time we had together.
As I was driving to the hospital Tuesday morning knowing that he was dying, I was wondering how I would get through this time. A song by Matt Redman based on Psalm 23 came on the radio called ‘You Never Let Go'.
The song starts:
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, your perfect love is casting out fear.
Even when I'm caught in the middle of the storms of this life, I won't turn back I know you are near.
And I will fear no evil, for my God is with me.
And if my God is with me, whom then shall I fear? Whom then shall I fear?
Oh, no. You never let go…through the calm and through the storm
Oh, no. You never let go in every high and every low.
Oh, no. You never let go. Lord, you never let go of me!
Dad has been through the valley of the shadow of death.
He has been through the calm and through the storms,
Goodness and love have followed him all the days of his life,
And he will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Brad and Family, you are all in my thoughts and prayers during this time of sadness and grief. I always think of your Dad with a smile and remember the time he was my next door cube mate in Finance. He would always shoot rubber bands over the cube wall and then, of course, deny doing it! Like I said, he always made me smile!

Betty, My thoughts are with you and I wish I had followed up sooner on trying to stay in touch with you and Earl. I often think about the times when Terry and I were with you and Earl while we were "very poor" students. We appreciated your friendship then and wish we had more time together. Since losing Terry to cancer in 1998, I have stayed in Lockhart, retiring from school but running my retirement home and rental property. Please come or call sometime. I am so sorry about your loss.
