Edward "Ed" Hamel, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and respected Austin homebuilder, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025, surrounded by the family and friends he loved so deeply.
Born in Chicago on April 9, 1932, the Air Force brought Ed to Austin in 1951, and he quickly made it home. Over the years, he built more than just houses-he built a life grounded in integrity, care, and connection.
Ed had a long and respected career in the building and real estate industry. He was active on both the local and state level, serving as President of the Austin Apartment Association and the Texas Apartment Association in the 1970s. He led the multifamily division at Nash Phillips/Copus (NPC) for many years before founding Ed Hamel Homes, where he spent nearly four decades as a custom homebuilder.
His work was thoughtful and personal, designing and crafting homes that reflected the lives of the families who would live in them. Known for his sharp eye, steady hand, and unwavering commitment to quality, he completed his final two homes in December 2024-a lasting reflection of his lifelong passion for building with purpose and heart. Throughout his career, Ed generously shared his knowledge and experience, mentoring many others in the construction and real estate community. His guidance, integrity, and high standards left a lasting mark on the industry and the people who had the privilege to learn from him.
Ed is survived and will be forever loved by his wife of more than 30 years, Marla McClain; his daughter and son-in-law, Nicole and Steve Smith; his treasured grandchildren, Shelby, Brady, and Grace, who lovingly called him "Gdad"; and his goldens, Remy and Tex. He is also survived by his sister, Jeanine Smith; brothers, Donald Hamelka (Jeane) and James Hamelka; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ed was endlessly proud of his grandchildren and delighted in being part of their lives. He rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on-from traveling to their sporting events, to sending thoughtful gifts, to keeping up with them through his frequent texts. His deep affection and involvement brought joy and laughter to every generation of his family.
He will be remembered for his kindness, quick wit, and the genuine way he showed up for the people in his life. Whether exploring a new place, enjoying a great meal, or simply spending time with those he cared about, Ed embraced each moment. His warmth, generosity, and deep sense of loyalty left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Ed's love for his many golden retrievers, donations may be made in his name to Gold Ribbon Rescue (
www.GRR-TX.com)-an organization close to his heart and a fitting tribute to his compassion and care.
