Elizabeth Haney Obituary

Elizabeth Stroud Settle Haney was born in Corsicana on Dec 10th, 1941 to Emily McNeill Stroud and Halsey Marvin Settle, Jr. She died peacefully taking a nap on July 15, 2025 in Austin, Texas. Elizabeth graduated from Corsicana High School in 1960 after serving as cheerleader, Most Outstanding Girl of the Senior Class and Queen of the High School. She kept up with quite a few of the wonderful High School friends. After attending SMU in Dallas, and becoming a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, she graduated in 1964 with a degree in English. She married Richard (Dick) Haney on 7/11/65. While Dick was in the Navy, they lived in the Philippines for part of his tour of duty. Elizabeth loved this opportunity to travel to different parts of the world and meet different peoples. She rarely met a stranger. After Dick left the Navy, they returned to the US and eventually ended up in Austin, Tx where Elizabeth began teaching in AISD. She took time off to rear her two much loved children Emily Settle Haney Barufaldi and Richard Halsey Haney. When she divorced, she went back to school, achieved her Paralegal certification and started working at Bickerstaff, Heath, Smiley where she worked for many years and then she worked at the Office of the Attorney General in Austin, Texas.

Elizabeth loved to discuss religion and politics to anyone that would engage, sometimes to her detriment. During her children's early years, they were members of University Christian Church in Austin where she met and developed many lifelong friends. After her children left home, she joined Tarrytown United Methodist Church to be near her sister, Emy Lou and brother, Happy. She joined and was an active member of the Swift Class until her health led her to move into various Assisted Living facilities. Her children remained dedicated to helping with her care until that last day when Emily had just taken her to a doctor's appointment.

Elizabeth made many friends throughout her life wherever she lived. She was preceded in death by her twin sister, and her mother and father, Emy and Halsey (Hawey) Settle. She is survived by her daughter Emily Barufaldi, her husband James Paul (Jim) Barufaldi, and their two children Cameron Elizabeth and Samantha Erin Barufaldi (Cameron is to marry Benjamin (Ben) Hrechko in September of this year); and her son, Halsey Haney, his wife, Laurie Stephens and their two boys Aidan Halsey and Stuart Laurence Haney. She will be remembered by her brother Happy Settle, his wife Donna Montgomery, and his children Emily Katherine Settle; Susan Ashley Hixson and her husband Marc Lester (Les), their children Avery Grace and Davis Halsey Hixson; Christopher Scott Settle, his wife Sarah Shepard, and their children Owen Christopher, Hadley Elizabeth (Haddie) and Andrew Burke Settle. Hitta's memory will also be cherished by her sister Emy Lou Sawyer, her husband Drew Grant and their children, Grant Settle Sawyer, Lacy Elizabeth Sawyer, her husband Sean Ian McIntosh, their son Grady Sawyer McIntosh, and Drew Scott Sawyer, M.D., his wife Lily Armstrong Sawyer, their children Charlotte Emmeline and William Drew Sawyer.

Memorial donations may be made to World Literacy Foundation, ProLiteracy, PBS or to a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at Tarrytown United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 9th at 10:00 a.m. with a reception to follow in the fellowship hall.
