Elmer Louis Schlein
After a long and interesting life of 94 years, Elmer Schlein, also known as "Pop," passed away suddenly on January 11, 2021. He was born on March 23, 1926, in Kansas City, Mo. to Bella (Seliger), and Charles Schlein. Elmer was a native of Kansas City, Kansas, and a graduate of Wyandotte High School. He enlisted in the Merchant Marine Cadet Corps in April, 1944. His basic training was at USMMCC San Mateo, California. He had mandatory sea duty as a cadet for 6 months, after which he reported to the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck, N.Y. He graduated from the Academy in December of 1946, at which time he was commissioned Ensign USNR, and Jr. Third Mate USMMR. He moved to Port Arthur, Texas in 1950, and was in business there until 1991.
He retired in 1991, and he and his beloved wife, Janet, moved to Lakeway. Elmer loved his dogs, and the game of golf. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Bella Schlein, and, his dear son, Kirk Schlein, with whom he hopes to have a happy re-union. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Janet (Normand) Schlein. His children, Benalu Schlein, Tony Schlein, Elizabeth Schlein, and Brian Mojo. His stepchlidren; Alicea and (Charles) Elliott, Steven and (Ellen) LeBlanc, Cliff LeBlanc. Grandchildren; Silvie Schlein, Thea Schlein, Joshua Devereux, Natasha Devereaux and Philip Watts, Brittany and Dustin Elliott, Brittani and Kyle Dorociak, Alexandra Elliott, Andrew LeBlanc and Dr. Cora Ames, Aubrey LeBlanc, Harris LeBlanc, and Lucas LeBlanc, and seven great grandchildren. During his retirement years, Elmer and Janet developed a very meaningful relationship with Marilyn and Bill Moretti, with whom they hold very dear, as well as Dr. Tom Strama.
Elmer was a kind and gentle soul, loved by all. A family only service celebrating his life was held on January 15th. The family welcomes donations made in Elmer's name to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
