George LEWIS Obituary

LEWIS, George Don
"Coach"
Many knew George Don "Coach" Lewis, some as "Don", some as "Coach", some as "Mr. Lewis" and some even as "that guy who waves at me everyday". A lucky few were privileged to even call him "Dad".

After living more than 20 years past every doctor's expectation following a catastrophic stroke, Coach made his way to Heaven to join his wife and parents on Saturday, May 16, 2015.

He served his country in Korea, where he met his wife of more than 30 years. After returning to the states, he became a dad. He and Barb followed Kevin to various athletic events over the years, leading to Coach's job as Sports Information Director at Leander High School, where he worked until his stroke in 1992.

But Coach's involvement with student athletes didn't end there. Following his stroke, and without the ability to speak or walk, he was still a fixture on the sideline at many Leander ISD sporting events, cheering on students with a beaming smile. Many, many classes of students knew "Coach" as a constant supporter both on and off the field, as he actively participated in FCA with Leander High School athletes.

In 2010, Coach moved to College Station to be near family and quickly became a fixture at Waldenbrooke Estates, greeting everyone he saw with a smile and spending his mornings and afternoons waving to folks going to and from work on 29th Street.

After learning of his passing, Facebook posts from friends reveals a life well lived. "Contagious smile" "Great respect, kindness" "He was a very positive influence in a lot of lives" "He was one of the reasons I went into teaching." "One hell of a man!"

Don "Coach" Lewis is survived by his son Kevin and granddaughter Erin, both of College Station.

A Celebration of Life Service will be on Friday, May 22 at 2pm at St. Michael's Academy Chapel, 2402 South College Ave, Bryan. You are invited to attend this service and dress athletically appropriate as a tribute to "COACH". Coach Lewis was an amazing man and mentor! He will be greatly missed. I was an athletic trainer under "Doc" Ohnheiser and Coach Lewis was there with us for most everything. Such an amazing man and touched so many lives.
