Gilbert Prud'homme Obituary

Gilbert Prud'homme, long-time Austin attorney and community leader, passed away on Friday, May 24th in Belton, Texas. Gilbert was born on November 14,1934 in Hemphill, Texas to Mary and Eck Prud'homme, the fourth of five children. After growing up in Pineland, Texas, he received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University of New Orleans and, in 1958, his law degree from the University of Texas. He married Marilyn Kay Miller in Dallas on November 5, 1960, to whom he was lovingly married until her death on June 20, 2000. An incredible and adoring father, he is survived by his children, Dr. Michelle Prud'homme Adams of McKinney, Roslyn Prud'homme de Keratry of Belton, Professor Gib Prud'homme of Annapolis, Maryland and 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Joe Prud'homme of Tyler, and his second wife, Connie O'Hearne.

He was a man about whom it can truly be said: he was loved by all. Gilbert was recently recognized for his six decades of extraordinary work as a lawyer in Austin. He derived great joy in serving his family, community, and fellow man and was renowned for his generosity. Over many years, he volunteered his time and expertise with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Diocese of Austin, Caritas Catholic Charities, the NAACP, and faith-based organizations in Central America. Gilbert was a life-long train enthusiast, great adventurer, and avid reader who dedicated himself to mastering a broad array of topics. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling with his son to international academic conferences and spending time with his daughters and grandchildren. His legendary "Gilbertizing" amused and amazed all who knew him.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 4311 Small Drive, Austin, Texas on Friday, May 31st at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Caritas of Austin.

I worked for Gilbert MANY years ago when he was partnered with Bill Kemp in an office across the street from the Courthouse in Austin. This was by first full time job, and it was a one-secretary office! They trained me in work that became my career for about the next 30 years, and I have many happy memories as well as some hilarious events to recall. My husband and I remained friendly with Gilbert for some years until we moved out of state. He was a great guy, and one I remember with great affection.

Daniel & Stacy Shelby just learned of the passing of Gilbert Prud'homme. He was instrumental in Daniel's life for over 50 years. We did so much work at the house off of Mesa and moved him from the office on Steck. We are heartbroken to hear of his return to Our Maker yet rejoice in the acceptance of an amazing Angel. Connie, Gil or any family members who wish to contact us may reach us at 512-902-7016.
May God continue to hold, heal and keep you all through this difficult time.
