Helen Marie McCoy Fischer

Helen Fischer Obituary

Family-Placed Obituary

Helen Marie McCoy Fischer was born September 1, 1913, in Little Rock, Arkansas to Mary Powell McCoy and Emmett Gray McCoy. She died in Austin, Texas, March 11, 2004, at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister. She is survived by her only daughter, Suzanne McFarlane and her husband, John; three grandchildren and their spouses: Laura and Mark Hopkins, Michael and Lisa McFarlane, and Russell McFarlane; and three great-granddaughters. Helen was a survivor, to which her life attests. She lived most of her life in El Paso, where her family moved from Little Rock for her father's health. She always said that the depression started for them when he died in 1925 after which they had little to no income for many years. She and her sister remained very close all of their lives, until the strains of old age separated them in the last few years. Helen worked for El Paso Natural Gas Company where she met and married Adrell Fischer in 1940. He served as a B26 pilot in the Army Air Corps in World War II. He died en route to Europe in February 1944. Her only daughter was born the following fall. She, then worked for the Federal Government until her retirement in 1973. After her retirement, she and her sister Mary loved to travel. They visited many places in the world. She moved to Austin in 2000 to be near her daughter and family. The Family would like to thank those people who assisted in her care this past year: Leslie Alexander of Odyssey Hospice, Meghein, Dee, Arnetra, Sandra, and the staff at the Summit of Northwest Hills. Memorial services will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church and the Summit at Northwest Hills. Interment will be at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso with the MIA marker for her deceased husband.
