Mrs. Poole, I went to high school with Ira, he was a great friend then and a wonderful person. It is so good to know that people don't change. I am so sadden by your loss as well as our communities. You always wonder what happens to your classmates and just hate it when you hear such sad news that they have joined our Lord in heaven but so happy that he is in no pain, I wish that i had kept up with Ira as well as a lot of our Reagain High School classmates. We shouldn't meet at funerals. Ira will be missed and will always be loved. You are in our prayers.Stay strong in Christ. Our Lord will carry you and your family and keep you strong lean on him he will not fail you.
We love you and will continue to pray for you.

Gone too soon! I have known Ira since we were toddlers and I have the photo to prove it. My mother, bless her heart, had a HUGE party for my first b-day and myself and at least ten other toddlers are all posed and poised for the camera and there is Ira, being consoled by an older cousin of mine while he is seen throwing a fit! He was not a happy camper in that photo! We have such little time on this Earth and memories such as those are truly precious. Please know that his family has my deepest and heartfelt sympathies.

Dear Family, Friends & Loved Ones,

Please accept my deepest condolences.

My late husband Emmett Smith, who passed away earlier this year -
www.caringbridge.org/visit/emmettsmith
also worked with Ira at KBVO.

My husband was one of the guys who repaired and maintained all the broadcast and transmitting equipment to keep the station on the air, while Ira went out and racked up all the sales for the station so the bills could get paid.

During that time, KBVO was an independant TV station, and it was not affiliated with a major network. The station didn't even have a news department. It was no guarantee that the station would be able to survive and thrive in the highly competitive Austin market, so it was important that new station in town be able to break-in to existing markets and earn a share of the advertising profits.

I'm not sure how many other sales people KBVO employed, but honestly, IRA POOLE is the ONLY name that I remember.

Ira was FIERCE and nobody else came close to acquiring the accounts that he did. He ran circles around everybody else.

As a result of Ira's talent in Austin's sales market and performing his job so well, most employees at KBVO enjoyed financial prosperity and lived very well, including my family.

Ira leaves a proud legacy as a good son, a devoted husband and father, as well as a talented, professional and accomplished co-worker.

He lived an enjoyable and wonderful life. He was rich with family, friends and loved ones. He will be truly missed and long remembered.

May you forever cherish all the wonderful memories.

Thank You Jesus and Thank You Ira!

Sincerely,

Cathy Leal

In 1976, football recruits at Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Tx. watched as Ira Poole of Austin Reagan High impressed team-mates and fellow students with his consistently genial and cordial personality, while simultaneously proving his football talent and skills.

Ira's legacy along with his too early departure will nevertheless reflect his good nature, righteous upbringing, positive well-being, and influential presence for years to come.

Peaceful memories to Ira's loved ones !

Always,

To the family of Ira Poole. Ira and my brother Darrell Wiley were great friends at Reagan High School. When my brother was killed in 1986, Ira gave a beautiful tribute at his funeral. He will truly be missed. My condolences go out to his wife, kids and other family. I know he and my brother are laughing and talking about their football days in Heaven. May God give you strength through this trying time.

I will miss my neighbor, Ira, dearly. He and his family were the first to greet my husband and me – by peeking over the backyard fence - after we moved in. We will never forget those smiling faces and Ira’s cheerful “Hello! Welcome to the neighborhood! Wow, you have a lot of dogs!”

As we settled in, it was a regular occurrence to see and hear Ira practicing t-ball / baseball with his young sons in their backyard. And often, many soft rubber t-balls found their way into our backyard - to our Labrador Retriever’s delight! Ira came by early one evening, after running out of the rubber balls for practice and asked if he could enter our backyard to retrieve them. The balls had fallen into an area comparable to a small forest with lots of native underbrush. He looked at me in disbelief and I mentioned, “You don’t want to go in there, but I know someone who will.” Our Labrador Retriever lived up to his name that day, as I showed Ira how I could pretend to throw a ball in the underbrush and our dog would find the ball and return it. An hour passed of laughing and retrieving about 20 balls, all the while talking about our families, his beloved Longhorns and that his sister and I attended the same college.

We regret that we allowed our busy lives to interfere with getting to know Ira and his family better in the nearly ten years we’ve shared that backyard fence. But we can still hear his laughter and the joy of his children as he played with them - and there is no doubt in our minds how much he loved life and his family. Ira was truly a wonderful and genuine person – a friend to all. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this time.

Ira and I were UT students and study-buddies in the RTF department. When his birthday came shortly after his jaw was broken playing intramural football, I offered to make him a cake. He laughingly agreed, not knowing that his piece was going straight into the blender so he'd be able to suck it down through a straw. To return the favor, he single-handedly got me through all the technical classes. After being out of touch for many years, we spoke a year or so ago and we laughed that at his age, he'd added to his brood. He was crazy proud and madly in love with Lara and his kids. My thoughts and prayers are with his family through these tough times. May the love and memories comfort you until you are reunited with G-d's gift of Ira J. Poole

To the Poole and Plicque Family,

My prayers are with each of you during this difficult time. I encourage you to read and focus on Psalm 121. It is such a blessing to know that we can look to the hills (the Lord) and know that our help (strength) come from Him and Him only.

Ira seemed to have touched the lives of so many living a blessed life exemplyfing compassion, encouragement, friendship and love for all. His life had to be one that Paul talked about in I Corinthians 15:58 as he encouraged those living a life in Christ; "Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord."

Marilynn, know that I am here for you if and when you need to talk.

I met Ira while installing the WideOrbit sales and traffic software at KEYE in June and July of 2007. During breaks I found myself talking sports (specifically University of Texas football) with him in his office. What impressed me was not only Ira's obvious love of the team but also his deep appreciation for the people he met through the years of being a fan and what he learned from them. That's a wonderful quality that everyone should have. I'm glad to have known him if only for a short time. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I remember Ira vividly from Jr High and High School as a truly charismatic and uplifting presence. Looking back I am more impressed that someone so young could exude such integrity and positive energy. His life touched many and he will be remembered. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

October 29, 2009

Ira was one of the most genuine human beings I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Having known him since junior high (Pearce Jr. High), that's saying quite a lot. He had a warmth in his smile and eyes and sincerity from his heart! If you were down, he had a way of bringing you back up! If you were excited about something, he was ecstatic along with you! He will be truly missed, but the wonderful memories from having known Ira since 1970 will live forever in my heart! My deepest sympathies go out to his precious family...

I had the great pleasure of knowing Ira at Pearce Junior High and Reagan High School. Ira was a close friend during those formative years. We argued and laughed as only 13-17 year old boys can do. He taught me to be competitive and compassionate; for while Ira and I might be on even ground in English and Math, my sports abilities were nothing. I remember to this day getting each other in such trouble in English class that the class broke out in hysterical laughter, including the teacher. "No, Ira, that is not what I meant when I told Joe to put the desk flush against the wall."
I offer condolences to Ira's family for the great loss they have endured. I am sorry that I lost contact with Ira during our adult years. My sorrow is with you as well as my prayers.

When Ira came to my wedding reception in 1996, he tried to pretend he'd been at the ceremony when I knew darn well he'd been up the street at the UT football game. He even tried to tell me his "favorite moment" of the wedding, laughing and eyes twinkling the whole time. I was lucky to work with Ira at KEYE.

I am proud to have known Ira in high school and to have counted him as one of my friends. Ira gave all he had to everything he did, and did all of those things with a smile and a kind heart. I had the pleasure of working closely with Ira for 10 years and will remember him fondly as a larger than life figure with tremendous charisma. His youthful spirit, contagious smile and laughter, along with a flair for animated story-telling had a way of lighting up a room and captivating an audience. Ira was always genuinely interested in the people around him and forever engaged in conversation. A true salesman, proud papa, friend, colleague and mentor - - he had the effect on people where they would go the extra mile for him, because they knew instinctively that he would do the same for them. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Godspeed, from a fellow KBVO-er.

Ira Poole was a force of nature. He was the kind of man you couldn’t compare to anyone else because he was not like anyone else. When I first moved to Austin in 1995, a Yankee General Manager inheriting a Texas TV station, he didn’t have to embrace me…but he did. Before my family had even been down to visit, he and his family took me to a U.T. Basketball game, picking me up at my corporate apartment with his trademark smile and a neatly folded burnt orange U.T. sweatshirt (which he said was so I didn’t embarrass him)!

Throughout my years at K-EYE, he saw new responsibilities, constant change, a move from selling Kids Club spots to marketing local news promotions, etc., but through it all, I never really saw him lose his cool. His ability to “roll with the changes” is what undoubtedly enabled him to thrive in an environment that saw so many of us move on, and he was as generous with his willingness to learn as he was with his willingness to share.

While always impeccably dressed, I remember once when we asked him to don a silly baseball jersey with us for a company retreat video, and he did an impromptu acting scene that would have made Saturday Night Live proud—such was his ability to be smooth no matter what was thrown at him. He loved to laugh even more than he loved to spin his yarns of Reagan High School football heroism…and he taught me a lot about being comfortable in your own skin.

The one talent Ira possessed more than anything, however, can be summed up in just 2 words: Disarmingly Charming. He never met a single person on whom he didn’t make an impression, and he will be sorely missed by the current and past co-workers at the station he called home.

My heart is truly sad today. When I moved to Austin in 1987 and started working at KBVO, Ira took me in and made me part of his family. I had dinner at the Poole’s house, we went to the same church and I love riding around in that Saab he drove. Ira had class and style like no one I had ever known before. We had so many good times that I will always cherish. I spoke with Ira in April when I was in town and we had time to catch up with each other. He was so proud of his children and family. He was a great guy with a smile and laugh that made your heart smile. To his family and friends I wish you peace during this time. He will truly be missed.

Ira was a true friend who will be missed terribly. As a young man entering broadcasting at KBVO-TV I was unsure of myself and Ira Poole took me under his wing and taught me the ropes. He taught me with compassion, integrity and honesty and for that I am eternally grateful. A true fan of UT Football Ira was never one to miss a game and his love of Austin was unmatched. I know I can speak for all employees of KBVO/KEYE when I say he leaves behind a legacy. Ira, may God take care of you now and may you rest in peace.
