A Requiem Mass at Christ The King RC Church, Alfreton, preceded burial at St Helen's Church, Selston, of Mr John O'Donnell (87), of Valentine Avenue, Selston.
Born and educated at Inishfree, Donegal, Ireland, Mr O'Donnell had lived locally for 56 years and had worked as a coal miner, retiring 27 years ago.
He was an avid reader, and was also interested in history, politics and current affairs. He was also an active member of the church and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Mr O'Donnell, who died at his home, leaves his wife, Mrs Rose Mary O' Donnell, six sons, two daughters and 10 grandchildren.
