Jan Beeman Obituary

Jan Beeman was the "earth mama" of the Armadillo World Headquarters concert hall in the mid-1970s. She was the soul of the Armadillo kitchen, a mentor to young artists, and "the face of hospitality" to touring musicians such as Frank Zappa and Van Morrison, who loved the 'Dillo for its home-cooked meals.

"If there was an important meal to cook, Jan cooked it," recalled Bruce Willenzik, an Armadillo alumnus who now runs the annual Armadillo Christmas Bazaar. "Whenever Zappa called, he asked for Jan. She knew all the musicians, their personalities, and tried to give them what they needed. Lose a button off your shirt? Hold on: Jan will sew it on for you. You say you need to do some laundry? Jan will fold it up for you."

Beeman, who died Wednesday in California due to complications from colon cancer, was almost 40 when she joined the Armadillo staff in the early 1970s after moving to Austin from San Angelo. She quickly assumed the role as a mother figure. Her vegetable casserole, with broccoli and cauliflower, was a signature dish. Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead raved about the shrimp enchiladas created in her kitchen.

"Jan was the calm, centered, mature older adult with common sense and a lot of heart. I can still see her standing in that kitchen, a big old spoon in her hand," Willenzik remembered. "She had some gray in her hair. And in those days, at the Armadillo, gray hair or wrinkles were as rare as a silk tie or a silk suit."

After leaving the Armadillo in 1977 (it closed three years later), Beeman founded a production company and managed the Doak Sneed band and Balcones Fault. Budding Austin musicians, including a young Stevie Ray Vaughan, sought her advice.

Even after she moved away from Austin in the 1980s, she continued in her role as a nurturer, working as a nurse in California.

In the words of Armadillo founder Eddie Wilson: "She made a whole lot of people feel well-cared for."

Jan,

This tribute arrives a little later in the years. Yet, I like to think you will know of the loving tributes written here.

Thank you for believing in a young woman who loved to cook and you taught how to make wonderful dishes. Thank you for teaching me of the importance of serving others and to ensure that hospitality was a gift to be given.

Thank you for taking care of me when times were a little shakey.

You were a wonderful loving woman with a gentle spirit and a heart as big as Texas.

Peace sweet gal,

Krissi Marshall

My condolences to the Beeman family. I lived at the Beeman home for a brief time and Jan made me feel at home with her warm smile and generosity...I know the loss very well as both my dad and mom passed away last year around the same time...yes it is a sad time and many tears, but I believe our family is our church and their love is God...here with us and with God. I love you all....

I came to know Jan in 1971, when her house on Koberlin Street in San Angelo was "The Mission", and home or home-away-from-home to many, many talented artists and wonderful friends. In a time of strife and uncertainty, she made that home a safe haven of peace and welcome, a fertile and productive ground for music, and an oasis of good fellowship, enduring humor, and wondrous food. She seemed able to see and nurture the good in all of us, and if your life's path touched hers, then you are truly blessed. Good journey, Jan, and safe home.

I met Jan in 1970, thru her daughter Ginger. She showed up at our house, Jodie's and mine, one night to talk about things that were bothering her. I never expected that one little conversation to turn into hours and then years of friendship. Our times at "The Mission" were always good one's. Jan was there for moral support when our daughter, Sinnamon was born. She helped us with advice thru troubled times and always with a double dose of love.
She has been in my heart, if not my life, for so long that I find now a gaping opening that isn't empty, but filled with the memories of a lifetime!
Jodie passed in 1997, but the last time I was with her, she and I talked at length and from those conversations, I know she would want to pass her love on to Ginger and Bill, a well as her "other" son, Steve, along with my own.
She will be missed.

Jan was a great lady, as you all know. She was also a lot of fun. We were a "couple" for about 7 years, in the mid & late 70s. There was quite a difference in our ages, but I seldom heard any negative remarks. because I think our friends and family knew that we were good for each other, and we loved each other. Jan helped make a man out of me. She also helped me believe in myself, and my music. After we broke up, & she moved to California, we'd still talk on the phone a few times a year, and on her Birthday. She had a beautiful smile and I loved to hear her laugh, even if it was at me. My wife, Susan has many of Jan's wonderful attributes, plus a few of her own. My condolences go out to Bill, Ginger, Arwen, and Jan's many friends & Family. Jan was truly a Beautiful person. If I'm lucky, I'll meet her on the other side! God Bless You Jan Beeman. I'll Never forget You!

There was a lot of love in the nachos and cookies and all the other food at the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Texas when Jan Beeman was in the kitchen. Her love continues in the craftsmanship and the smiling face of her son, Steve and her goodness will continue to be felt in the Austin area.

My special thanks to Jan Beeman and to her son Bill for being a part of my life. Through them, I have had the pleasure of meeting some very special friends. They have been a part of my life and my children's lives for the past 20+ years. Through the good times and the bad, I knew they were always there for me as I will always be there for them... My love to Bill and Ginger. And Janelle, if anyone taught me to appreciate great music, it was you!!! I will miss you. All my love! Keep on Rocking!!!

I had the great fortune of having Jan and her family be the first people I met when moving from Nashville to Tustin Ca. in 1965',at the age of 12, when my folks split up. Bill and I became immediate best of friends and Ginger and I started Jr. High together. Without a father around, Mac (Jan's husband at the time) became a true father figure. Together they taught me my love of fishing and country. Jan saw to it I was always included on their vacations to the Mohave Desert and Lake Meade. When Mac passed they left for San Angelo. I followed in 71' and moved into a life changing experience in their home, "The Mission". A large house crammed full of music, friendship, love and great food. The friends and lessons Jan introduced me to then, are still with me. I don't know if she knew how proud I was when she'd introduce me to people as her #2 son. I certainly hope so.
Go with Love and Peace fine lady.

My memories of my grandmother are sporadic but filled with love and fondness.

I remember a woman who loved people and animals; I probably loved her dog Rags as much as she did. She also gave me my first kitten, Nawita..a name I could barely pronounce, let alone spell :)

I remember a woman who loved to cook (she made the best Huevos Rancheros) and convinced a 4 year old to drink tomato juice with tobasco and celery...my own personal virgin Bloody Mary!

I remember the crashing waves of the ocean coming from the sound machine she used to help her fall asleep. How her love for music stretched across all genres and decades, even to the music loved by a young teenage girl.

I remember gift boxes from California that always included a tub of chocolate chip cookies from Trader Joe's...because she new how much I loved them.

But more importantly, I remember how she never failed to express her love for me, no matter how far the distance.

My only regret is that she didn't get to see her five month old great grand-daughter MacKenzie before she passed. But I will make every endeavor to share my memories and those of others with her. And I will smile each time I walk into the Threadgill's on Riverside and see my grandmother's picture...a momento to all the lives she touched.

Jan always had a warm smile and loving hug to greet you with. She instantly made me feel loved and right at home the minute I was with her. She made everyone feel this way. I am so blessed and thankful to have known her. She will be loved always. May God bless and comfort Ginger and Billy and all her family and friends.

Jan and I were married June 1952 in Las Vegas Nevada before her 18th birthday. Though our marriage lasted only four years, Jan gave me two wonderful children, Ginger in 1953 and Bill in 1954. She moved from California to my home State of Texas to live in San Angelo and later to Austin. After some fifty years and her move back to California, we spent a lot of time getting acquainted and sharing stories of our experience with mutual friends in music. I had spent 70 years playing fiddle and she knew most of the Western Swing musicians I had played with. These last few years leave me with loving memories of the sensitive caring lady she had become. I am grateful for the precious time spent with a family reunited.

Jan was always the 'positive one'. Something good was about to happen...always. She was full of encouragement for "Tom & Billy" (the folk duo who became T. Gosney Thornton & Doak Snead) way back
at the Airman's Club in San Angelo, Texas in the late 60's and early 70's. Then again later in Austin...never wavering...always "something good is going down here"! We'll miss you Jan. Go in peace!

Jan was always so hospitable. I first met her in 71 in San Angelo. Her home was dubbed "The Mission." The door was always open. She introduced me to "a pinch of garlic in your coffee." When I later moved to San Antonio, her home in Austin was always open if I needed a place to crash. And Oh my Lord she could cook! I always left town at least 5 lbs heavier. She always welcomed me with open arms when I would drop by the Dillo. She was a lovely, giving soul and will be welcomed at that Great Armadillo in the Sky.

Another treasured bit of Austin-that-was gone. This hurts. Will never, ever forget those Armadillo nachos, enchiladas and cookies.
Frank Zappa dedicated the live album he recorded at AWHQ, "Bongo Fury," to the Armadillo kitchen staff "and especially Jan Beeman." That's one sense in which she lives on.
Sympathy to family and friends.

the years fly by so fast. seems like yesterday we were all sitting backstage at the 'Dillo laughing and enjoying life. Jan was a strong but gentle woman who was kind and thoughtful to everyone. She was always good to me. She tried to make this tough old world a little easier for everyone she touched. My thoughts go out to her family and all the people who are touched by her passing. Too few good people in the world and now we have one less. Our loss.

Quite a week, loosing Larry Trader and Jan Beeman.

Larry went back into the Central Texas sixties with Willie. I recall him promoting WN's records and Helotes dances long before the 1st Picnic and the ACL pilot.

He took a lot of untold history and priceless stories with him. Too bad no one did an interview.

Jan was a near-perfect co-worker and a positive spirit.

Brad didn’t mention the Austin Music Umbrella. It was at the beginning our City’s music charities. They had a desk at Armadillo. Jan was a founder, perhaps THE founder. When not in the kitchen, she was helping musicians get under the Umbrella.

Had a beaming smile to match her name.

Special woman.
