I first met Thurston when interviewing for a band member replacement. We had three members leave the service (and band). Thurston fit in perfectly. The band was back out on the road due to his music knowledge and capability. Most of our adventures were in New Mexico. One memorable outing was in 1974 in a town where the youth were Mexican American. None of our music was resonating with this group. JT turns around and says, let's try a rendition of La Bomba and we winged out the tune. Instantly the crowd went crazy sand we were accepted. I went on many excursions with him particularly to visit his beloved Austin Tx on long weekends. Austin was a great destination in 1974. After leaving the service in Oct 1974 Thurston badgered me for at least two years to come to Texas. I finally agreed. The last time I saw him, we met at his 30th Birthday bash at some vow type hall where a large family gathered. He had our instruments set up and we played old tunes for them and his friend Eric Johnson all of whom were gracious in their tolerance of the noise being made. To this day I can proudly say that because of Thurston, I have two Texan children and two Texan grandchildren. Thank you JT.

Thurston Mannix, died 10-27-24 at his home in Volente. He died in his sleep, peacfully. Thurston was a man of many talents, he was a VET, auditer, glass man and one of the best guitarists in Central Texas. I met Thurston in the 2nd grade and we grew up in the best of Austin and Volente times. I named him THOR in 1966 due to his ability on his guitars , he literally made them scream. I miss him dearly now and I will for the rest of my life. LUV SHELL
