I hadn't realized the John's first year as principal at WHS was my first year teaching there! He seemed so at ease, welcoming, and friendly to this new, nervous teacher!! We would occasionally talk about the school district and its rapid growth, since my husband and I were some home builders in the district.
John truly showed an interest in every aspect of the school and the district. I loved working for him, and always felt he had my back!

I was so sad to learn of John's death. I worked with him at the Texas Education Agency for about 5 years; he was my supervisor for some of that time. He brought a sense of humor and dedication to the challenges of the work we did. I remember him with fondness.

I recall a day at Westlake when no students appeared in my 5th period government class. I walked into the Commons area to find a large group of seniors staging a sit-in to protest some perceived wrong. I don't recall the problem, but I do recall how Mr. Matysek handled it. Instead of yelling at them to get to class or be suspended, he sat down with them on the floor for at least 10 minutes and heard them out, asking questions to get clarification. He promised to take their concerns under consideration to arrive at a solution that was best for all concerned. Then he got up and told them it was time for them to go to class. They thanked him and calmly went to class.

John was born in September 1940 in Taylor, Texas, and I was born there in December1940! We could have gone to high school together, but I moved to Austin before I started school. I taught under John at Hill Country Middle School and admired him as one of the best principals I ever had, never knowing these details of our origins. RIP with your beloved, John.

John made my life better. He was my ideal, a truly authentic loving, solid man. Solid in so many ways that I struggle to be. He was not struggling. I don’t think so. He was just that way: solid. He will always be in my life.

I respected and loved John Matysek when we worked closely together for many years at Hill Country Middle School and Westlake High School. I especially remember the honest and heartfelt conversations John and I shared and his support of me as a teacher, department chair, and parent. John displayed his expertise in many arenas: brightening up Westlake High School with new coats of paint, leading staff meetings by mixing important issues with humor and delicious pie, and mingling with students and support staff almost every day in the cafeteria. The list goes on. It was an honor to be in the canoe with John. May his family find peace in lovely memories of a remarkable educator and man.

John was an exceptional leader whether in the classroom, on the field, or in administration. He was a positive role model for everyone and greeted everyone with his memorable smile and kind heart. I learned so much from him while working with him and the team at TEA.
Rest in Peace John.

I knew John first when I coached at Hill Country MS, but didn’t get to know him much while there. I learned much about him, though, from the many coaches and teachers who knew him well and respected him so. I tried to get him to hire me as an assistant principal when I got my Masters, but alas, no luck!
It was 20 years later when I had the honor and good fortune of working along side of him at “The Agency”. His stories and “John-isms” kept us rolling, but always on task! I would rib him about not hiring me at Westlake and he would just smile that great smile. Whether on the golf course, board room, or at his desk, we always were in for a treat. Rest in peace, good friend!

I love John Matysek so much and owe him everything for helping me begin a long teaching career. I had the privilege of babysitting Dayna when I was at Crockett High School. I got to know Coach Matysek and he and Linda trusted me to babysit Dayna!
John hired me at Hill Country Middle School as a math teacher. He was a fabulous principal and I always knew he had my back! I kept the clock and scoreboard at middle school football games. I got to spend a lot of time with John and Linda.
He was a giant of a man and inspired so many students and teachers. Rest in peace.

Mr. Matysek hired me in 1987 as the newspaper adviser and photo teacher at Westlake. He took a risk hiring me right out of college, but I think being a fellow Baylor Bear helped! I could not have asked for a more compassionate, understanding, patient and wise principal. I was in his office many times to chat about topics the kids wanted to cover in the paper, and he always supported them and me, despite the potential for controversy. I helped honor him at the ceremony when he was named Administrator of the Year by the Texas Association of Journalism Educators. I'm blessed and honored to have worked with him at Westlake. He was an inspiration to me and so many other Chaparrals.

Such a kind, kind man. The Matysek family will always be near and dear to my heart. Such fond memories of John and Linda, not just as my high school principal but also my friend. One who never missed an opportunity to offer kindness and guidance. Certainly wonderful traits in a coach and a principal as one can see by his many accomplishments in life. What a loving obituary Dayna.

John was my first boss when I started my career working for the State of Texas. I have so many fond memories of John. The coach in him never left and most of the time when people heard him talking to me they thought I was in trouble.that was just John. The numerous times he would put his head down and shake it from side to side because of something I said that made him laugh, that was just John. When you heard John laugh you couldn’t help but laugh with him.John and I had many heart to heart conversations as he offered guidance and friendship. He left an everlasting footprint on my heart and he is someone I will never forget. At the end of every day I would say, see you tomorrow boss, and he would say to me every timeGod willing and the creeks don’t rise..Make those angels laugh until they have tears coming from their eyes boss! One of the best there ever was just went home.

John was my principal at Westlake, and as a member of the Faculty Advisory Committee, I worked closely with him for several years. I loved the fact that He always backed his teachers—as long as we stayed in the canoe!

It was a privilege and a pleasure to help keep the HCMS and WHS canoes upright with John Matysek at the helm. He was a leader, a teacher and a protector of his students, faculty and staff. I remember the mom who picked her child up from school for a dental appointment. Upon return they discovered students and teachers in the football stadium. Not realizing it was a practice fire drill she insisted her child be wherever Mr. Matysek was because he would keep her safe. We are all better off for having known and loved him. I am proud to have been a part of his Hill Country and Westlake family.
