John Whitaker Obituary

John Joseph Whitaker, MD John Joseph Whitaker, MD, age 77, passed away July 22, 2010. Jack was born on August 23, 1932 in Omaha, Nebraska and was raised along with his sister Mary and cousins by his grandparents. Jack attended Creighton University High School, graduating with class honors in 1950. He then attended Creighton University, earning a Bachelors degree in 1954 followed by a medical degree in 1958. Following his studies he worked as an intern at Mount Carmel Hospital in Detroit, Michigan before serving as a medical resident and associate consultant at the Mayo Clinic from 1959 to 1965. In addition to his residency, Jack served his country as Assistant Chief of the US Army's Brook General Hospital in San Antonio from 1962 to 1964, reaching the rank of Captain. Following a terrible Minnesota winter, Jack escaped Rochester and moved to Austin with his family in 1965, becoming in the process the first practicing oncologist in the city. From 1965 until his retirement in 2008, Jack worked with Capital Medical Clinic and Southwest Regional Cancer Center. He treated thousands of patients in the city of Austin at Brackenridge, Holy Cross, Seton, and St. David's hospitals as well as the People's Free Clinic, which he helped to found in 1970. He also utilized his considerable medical talents in Washington, D.C., where he worked as a special consultant to the FDA's board on Oncology Drugs from 1976 to 1980. Jack liked to spend his free time hunting, fishing, playing cards, yelling at televised sports, smoking cigars, drinking Irish whiskey, and enjoying the company of good friends. Though he was a member of several rarified and distinguished Austin clubs, Jack felt most at home in a local greasy spoon like "Dirty Martin's" or Enchiladas y Mas. Dr. Whitaker is survived by his wife, Cindy; his two sons, Jeffrey and Bob; his daughters, Mary Coyle and Brenda; and his grandsons, Gus and Ben. The family wishes to thank all of Jack's close friends and family who were there in a time of great need. His family would especially like to thank Dr. Richard Helmer, Dr. Kent Beasley, Dr. Rashad Dabaghi, Dr. Timothy Dziuk, Dr. William Kessler, Dr. Paul Harford, the staff at the Radiation Center and all of the truly wonderful people that work on 7 North at Seton. A visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home North Lamar. A Memorial service will be held the following day at 7:00 p.m. at the same location. As a five year old, I remember Jack and his convertible, his son and duaghter, Jeff and Brenda on Windsor Road. I am sorry to hear of your loss. Jack was a good friend to my father and the picture is just the way my mom remembers him. Peace be with you all in this time of memories and healing.

Jack did so many quiet good deeds for so many people in Austin. On a personal note, I'm convinced that Jack saved my life once. And he was so good and kind caring for my mother when she had cancer. There are probably hundreds of untold stories of people he helped. And he was such an original character and so much fun to be around. He's irreplaceable in this world.

I never met Dr. Whitaker but he saved my mother's life and there is not enough thank yous that I could ever say for that. My mother adored him and missed seeing him after his retirement. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

Dr. Whitaker was my daughter’s oncologist. Thanks to him she was able to fight with grace an good humor her rare kind of cancer. Unfortunately he retired but he chose another great oncologist for her care. Right now they might be chatting in the same way they used to do it during her visits. I will always be thankful for all what he did for my daughter Raquel.

Dr. Whitaker was my boyfriend's oncologist in addition to being his friend for 30 years. He was a class act and was very kind to everyone. He always made you smile. We were all very blessed to have this wonderful M.D in our city. My deepest sympathy to his family and colleagues and those of us who were fortunate enough to have met him. God Speed

I will always be grateful for the wonderful care that Dr. Whitaker gave my mom (Hazel Walker) from 1967-1996 as she battled breast and bone cancer. The acts of kindness shown by him and his nurse Vi are too numerous to mention. He proved over and over again that he became a doctor for all the right reasons. We were blessed to have him in our lives.

Sincerely,
Sharon Whitehurst

Jack Whitaker was a good guy. We spent many great evenings partying and carrying on around Austin in the 1970's & 80's. He is missed.
