Joyce Smith

Joyce M. Smith went to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, in Austin, Texas. Her loving, devoted husband, Norris Smith, was by her side.

Joyce is also survived by their children, Trent Smith and wife Carla, and Dana Smith Cobb and husband Sam Cobb, all of Austin; and grandchildren, Ryan Cobb and his wife, Lauren, of Kingsville, Texas; Leanna Cobb, Kylie Smith, and Alana Smith, of Austin.

Joyce grew up in Millington, Tennessee, and went to Millington High School. Upon graduation, she attended Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, and received a degree in Elementary Education. While at Union, Joyce met the love of her life, Norris E. Smith, and they were married after she graduated. The two of them shared deep love and partnership for 67 years.

Joyce loved teaching elementary-age children, with her favorite grade being second. She was named "Miss Congeniality" in high school, a trait she carried throughout her life. She was always pleasant and had many lifelong friends, including one since second grade.

Joyce was an avid award-winning quilter and was president of the Nashville Quilters Guild for several years. Her quilts often held meaning—one quilt depicted houses in which she had lived and churches she had attended. She took great joy in making cards to acknowledge birthdays and various events. Friends and family looked forward to receiving her creations each year.

Joyce's sweet disposition and warm greeting will be deeply missed by many.

Visitation will be held at Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail, Austin, on Monday, March 13, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 14, at 2:00 pm at Manchaca Baptist Church, 1215 FM 1626, Manchaca, Texas.
