Karl Hendler Obituary

Karl Hendler On March 2, 2010, Karl Hendler passed away suddenly in his Tarrytown home. His death was and remains a shock to all of those who knew him and is bound to invoke sadness for years to come, especially among his family. Karl was one the liveliest and most dynamic people to ever have tried to make a living in the vibrant city of Austin, Texas. He will be missed greatly, but with the appreciative knowledge that he has finally obtained the peace and tranquility he worked so hard for and undeniably deserved. Karl was born on September 27, 1955 in Bogota, Columbia. His childhood friends and peers always noted his enthusiastic outlook on everything and the determination he had in trying to accomplish even the smallest tasks. After attending Colegio Anglo Americano in Bogota, Karl immediately set out for whatever adventure he could find. His life-altering journey began in the Amazon Rainforest for five months among natives who had never seen an outsider before, then to Europe were he resided in London for almost a year before he traveled to Ottawa, Canada where he remained for another year before eventually coming to Austin. He arrived in every country with almost no knowledge of any language other than Spanish, almost no money, and with only his determination and wit to help him not only survive, but grow as an individual. In Austin he began a different adventure of trying to establish a permanent home and business in a new city. While in Austin, Karl attended the University of Texas while performing various jobs involving maintenance and repairs. From those jobs he established an incredible work ethic that he used to start his own real estate company, Karl Hendler Properties. After decades of hard work, he managed to build the business, the home, the friendships, and the family that he had always dreamed of. Everyone who worked or knew Karl always noted his colorful and engaging personality, no matter the relationship they had with him. During the summer of 1984, Karl met the love of his life, Linda Payn. They were married on August 9, 1986 in Mayfield Park, where they continued to celebrate anniversaries ever since. The greatest reflection of their marriage has always been their three children: Wyndson (age 19), Julian (17), and Carlyn (15). Karl was best described as a man of passion and love. A man who lived his life with an innocent and almost childish fervor, many could not help but consider him eccentric. He loved his wife with an eternal passion that put almost any pair of newlyweds to shame, and did so continuously for more than twenty three years until the very morning he passed away. He loved his children with such overwhelming vigor it was almost impossible for others to understand how he could maintain it day and night as he did, no matter the circumstances. He loved and cared for his friends to an extent that is impossible to put into a mere passage. No matter the feelings he fostered towards someone, or they for him, he never hesitated in helping them when asked because it was always the right thing to do. He could never consider the concept of not helping out someone in need. He will be missed by many, from life-long friends to near strangers whose lives he touched with his advice and insight. Karl is survived by his wife, Linda, and his three children, Wyndson, Julian and Carlyn. He is also survived by his mother, Nelly Santos, who lives in Bogota along with Karl's three siblings, Jenny Franco Santos, Oscar Franco, and Felipe Uribe, along with numerous other nieces and nephews in both Columbia and Texas. A memorial service will be held at the Cook-Walden funeral home at 6100 North Lamar on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. The Hendler family would like to express their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this time. They are especially grateful for the amazing support from the staff of University Federal Credit Union and the overwhelming support from the entire Austin High Band Community. It should come as no surprise that Karl had taken the time to list his core beliefs and principles so that those who did not have the luxury of knowing him well could at least gain a glimpse into his mind and soul that has inspired so many over the years: In the business world, I want to instill TRUST - in all my clients. I see the urgency to inspire the following qualities ESPECIALLY in our young tenants: 1. Finish the job completely, do all your tasks with pride and always strive to do the very best work possible... 2. Protect the earth by preserving our resources even if it is by making SMALL sacrifices. 3. Leave a legacy to our future generations. 4. Have the determination to stand up for the things that are important, have the courage to fight injustice, help others whenever you have the opportunity and never, ever be a bystander... 5. Take a stand, make a difference... 6. Honor the soldiers who fight our wars and give up their lives and their health so that we can have all the blessings that so often we take for granted. 7. Respect and admire the workers who feed us and whose sweat and tears construct our homes. 8. Honor your elders, for they possess hard-earned wisdom. 9. Live amidst oceans of unending inquiry, where you dare question even the question! And ABOVE ALL, become one with the word "EMPATHY". With all my heart and sincerity, Karl Hendler

Linda and family:

My name is Rachel Wyatt. My family owns Unit 101 in Preservation Square. I lived there while in college at the University of Texas at Austin. Karl and I became good friends in my three years living there. I even was Vice President of the Homeowners Association.

There are three things I will always remeber about Karl-

1. Linda- He loved you like crazy. I would see the look in his eye when he talked about you. I remember asking him once how he handled all his duties and he said "I can leap buildings as long as Linda is by my side." I knew then what love truly meant and what to look for as I grew into adulthood.
2. He loved his children. I remember when we would talk about the sports they'd play and how he was always rushing somewhere to pick them up or see them perform in something. He was so proud of you guys.
3. He always tried to do his best even against great obstacles like prickly homeowners or a crazy fraternity next door. He tried to always do the right thing.

He was a good man and loved you all like crazy. Please accept my deepest sympathies. Karl will be truly missed.

I was shocked to hear of Karls passing. He was a great guy. I can still hear him talking about his love for his wife and kids. He ALWAYS had so much to talk about when it came to his family. He exuded love for his wife, and the way he loved them was inspirational to see a dad and husband love his family so much. You guys are in my prayer. Dont forget, and everyone knew it, your dad/husband, really loved you. Rest in Peace Karl. You will be missed.

I was so shocked to hear that one of my favorite agents/landlords had passed. Everyone here at Lee Properties was sad to lose you. I guess it hit me pretty hard. We have been working together in one way or another for 7 years and you always had words of praise for me. I loved hearing your voice and seeing you. I will surely miss you everyday. You will always be in my thoughts.

Karl, You have been and always will be my friend. We shared many experiences together these past few years. I have learned much from our friendship. I could not have asked for a more loyal, caring friend. Thank you for your trust and guidance. You are a wonderful person. Your departure was much too soon. You will not be forgotten.
We will see each other again some day. Until that day, rest peacefully my friend.
