Maggie Coleman Obituary

Maggie Coleman Maggie Mae Lacey Coleman's earthly journey came to a peaceful end on Wednesday, October 17 in the comfort of her home and with family. She was surrounded by a view of her beloved yard with roses, flowers, and trees of life. Born in Lexington, Mississippi on, September 3, 1920; the eldest of twelve children born to Jessie and Johnnie Lacey, she is a graduate of Saints Industrial High School. She was united in matrimony to Curtis Othello Coleman in1939 in Lexington, Mississippi. In 1943, they were part of the great migration north and settled in Chicago, Illinois. Maggie was a feisty person and never met a stranger. As a homemaker, Maggie initiated and assumed leadership roles in many community and church activities while raising five children. In 1997, Maggie and Curtis, and daughter Elaine, moved to Austin where their youngest daughter and son-in-law reside. Her husband of nearly sixty-eight years, Curtis O. Coleman, Sr., son Curtis Jr., daughter Shirley McCall, and four siblings predeceased her. Her surviving children are Marva Reed (Dr. Christopher Reed) of Chicago, Elaine Coleman, and Brenda Coleman-Beattie (Chester Beattie Jr.) of Austin. Maggie's Chicago grandchildren include Robert Reed and Malcolm Reed (Audrey); in Houston, William Reed (Dr. Monica Clark-Reed, M.D.), and in Dallas, Marcus McCall (Takeda). Great grandchildren in Chicago include Ashley, Dominique, and Faith Reed. Survivors include seven siblings, who reside in the Chicago area: Reverend John Lacey (Stella), Louise Smith, Eva Spires, Minnie Horton (Thomas), Curtis Lacey, Odean Bulliock, Dr. Roy Lacey, M.D. (Iraetta), In addition, Maggie leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, chosen family, and friends in Illinois, Indiana, Texas, Louisiana, California, Mississippi, and Brazil. An Austin, Texas memorial service will be held Sunday, November 18 at her beloved and faithful Bannockburn Baptist Church home. King-Tears Mortuary prepared Maggie for the flight to Chicago for home going services entrusted to Leak and Sons Funeral Home. Her service will take place at her former church home in Chicago, Liberty Baptist Church, on Saturday, October 27 at 10 a.m. and internment will follow at Lincoln Cemetery next to her late husband Curtis. Words cannot express the love and happiness Maggie experienced during her nearly fifteen years in Austin. Her church, neighbors, chosen family, and friends were truly joyful and amazing and for this, the family is most grateful. The family wishes to acknowledge her caregiver Nancy Gonzalez, who for two and a half years provided loving, compassionate care. The caring health providers and their staff over the years include Drs. Kapadia and Narepalem, Dr. Gerald Levy and nurse Mariette, Dr. Steven Fehrenkamp, his entire staff especially APN Amy Esqueda, Dr. Edith Simmons, Ms. Nikki, and nurse Christie, Thomas Van Horn, and the pharmacy staff at HEB located at William Cannon and Brodie especially Maria. Per Maggie's request, she nurtured and loved many flowers and gardens during her lifetime and does not desire flowers at this time. Instead, please consider a contribution in her memory to any of the following: Meals on Wheels and More, Family Eldercare, or the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
