Mary SCHMIDT Obituary

SCHMIDT,
Mary Ann Joseph
Our beloved mother, Mary Ann Joseph Schmidt, 95, passed away peacefully in Houston on August 18, 2015. Mary was born September 11, 1919 in Austin, Texas to Joe A. Joseph and Sophia Daywood Joseph, one of nine children.

Mary was a life-long resident of Austin. She graduated from Austin High School. She was a member of Our Lady's Maronite Church since its beginning, was a member of the Austin American Lebanese Association. She volunteered weekly at a nearby nursing home and her church until she moved to Houston. Mary was very social, loved to dance, and play card games and dominoes. Her last two and a half months, she lived in a retirement community in Houston where she made many friends among the residents and staff who knew her as "Miss Mary". She played cards with her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren until the very end.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Werner G, Schmidt. She is survived by her daughter Sharon Samson and her husband Marty of Houston; son Werner Schmidt Jr. and his wife Kathy of Aledo; grandchildren: Alicia Samson and her fiancé Joseph Romo, Mark Samson, Shelley Schmidt and her fiancé Robert Scott of Austin, and Steven Schmidt; her great-grandchildren Landon Samson, Josh, Miranda and Mia Romo, her brother Joe A. Joseph, Jr. and numerous nieces and nephews. The family greatly appreciates the care given to their mother by Texas Home Health Hospice, Home Health Resources and the staff and residents of Village on the Park in Houston.

Mary was amazing. I loved her first for her devotion to her husband when he was a resident of Retirement & Nursing Center and then I loved her for her devotion to the other residents as a bingo volunteer these past years. She was a special lady who never stopped giving. She was an inspiration to many.

Sharon and Bubba, we were so sorry to learn of your mother's passing, but know she is rejoicing at the reunion with her Savior, your Dad, her friends and neighbors on Martin Ave. I enjoyed speaking with her earlier this year and sharing memories. Keeping your family in our prayers. God's peace!

Sharon, Werner (aka Bubba)
I was sorry to hear of Mary's passing. I really enjoyed having her as a neighbor and as a friend. She was always a pleasure to talk to; I was amazed as how alert she was and how aware she was of current events., she had a life spirit of a person many years younger. She also had a wonderful sense of humor even if it was about health problems. I did feel guilty at times when I would see her out raking leaves or sweeping which she was determined to do no matter how bad she felt and could not be convinced that the yard looked fine, much better than mine.

Sharon, so sorry to hear of your loss! I have many fond memories of your family, especially during visits to the Haydons on Martin Ave. In Austin! Thoughts & prayers are with you & your family during this difficult time! Hate that I missed your visit to the funeral home in Giddings back in March but it was truly appreciated!
