Michael Malone Obituary

Renowned tattoo artist Michael Malone was found dead Wednesday at his home in Chicago, an apparent victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Recognized as one of the world's boldest tattoo visionaries in the 34 years since he bought Sailor Jerry's shop in Honolulu, Malone lived the life of an artistic rogue until he was slowed by ill health in recent years. "Time to check out" began a note police found at Malone's home. He was 64.

Although he was revered in Honolulu, where he hosted weeks-long visits from the biggest names in tattooing, including Don Ed Hardy, Bob Roberts, Miss Roxy and Paul Jefferies, Malone became bored with island life and relocated to Austin on a whim in 1984. He established a second China Sea Tattoo Co. at 2712 B Guadalupe St., just a block away from the former location of the Austin Chronicle.

Known by his nom de plume "Rollo Banks," Malone immediately fell in with the Chronicle crew, creating the Chinese New Year and Year of the Dead cover designs and also serving as a sort of spiritual advisor. In his role as Chronicle cover Svengali, Malone discovered up-and-coming artists such as Frank Kozik and Keith Graves.

Even with only three tattoo shops in town, there wasn't much ink business in Austin in the '80s, so Malone moved back to Honolulu around 1989 with his then-wife, Austin writer Margaret Moser. He had been living in Chicago, based at Taylor Street Tattoo, for about four years.

Malone was handpicked by Sailor Jerry Collins to take over the legendary tattoo shop at 1033 Smith St. in Honolulu's red light district after Collins' death, which came in 1973. Malone paid about $35,000 for the business, which proved to be an incredible bargain because the shop came with hundreds of sheets of Collins' tattoo designs, as well as his tattoo machines. The sheets, called "flash," sold for upwards of $2,000 each and the tattoo "guns" much more than that, as Sailor Jerry has become regarded as the Babe Ruth of American tattooing.

Covered in permanent ink designs at a time when few were, and possessing a cold steel glare, Malone could come off as a gruff, unapproachable figure. But those who were able to penetrate the exterior came to know a kind soul, a brilliant wordsmith (and dreadful speller), who could hold court like none other.

And he possessed a hair-trigger wit. Once, noted Los Angeles tattoo artist Jack Rudy complained that he'd written Malone two or three letters, yet didn't receive any in return. "What are we, pirates or pen pals?" Malone shot back.

Plans for a memorial service are pending.

I spend the early eighties in Hawaii, and was tattooed by Mike as often as I could. I was a Marine stationed in Kaneohe Bay. Mike was such a great guy, I would go to the shop even when I wasn't getting tattooed just to hang out with him. It's been 42 years since I sat with Mike and I think of him often. He is definitely missed. His China Sea business card is still in my wallet today.

Dearest Rollo,
I am thinking about you on your 71st birthday. As you probably know, I have Stage IV cancer without a lot of hope. Steve is still here with me and we will see this through to the end together. I know you watch out for me too. One day we will all be together.

Dearest Rollo, This New Year's Eve finds me filled with joy and in love with Steve Chaney. I know you'd be good with that - it seemed auspicious that Steve and I had our first date on the 28th anniversary of yours and my wedding. And not since you has a man shown me the kind of love and devotion I treasured from you. I know you send us your good wishes for our future together. Love you always, Margaret

I didn't miss writing you on your 68th birthday, Rollo, I waited until mine this year. You always made my birthdays, wonderful, memorable, and happier than I could imagine. That you no longer hurt or feel bad is what makes not having you here to celebrate with okay. I love you eternally.

Rollo,

Today i was talking with my young son about being in the Navy and my one and only experience of me and my shipmates being tatooed by an artist named Rollo. I come home to look for you on the internet, to pass on the legend only to find out
you are gone. I just want to say thanks and i will always remember that night. As i was telling my son you were the best!

Rollo,
I had no idea you were in Chicago. I would have loved to have seen you here. I always loved walking into China Sea Tattoo and seeing what you were up to. I loved to hear your stories! Your humor! I enjoyed you like a kid loves a pirate book. You sparked my imagination. You and Yikes, and what ever mischief you guys were up to kept me on my toes. The Honolulu Babylon. You 2 going to Austin drew me there. Last time I saw you we had coffee together in some airport coffee shop while you were waiting to change planes.
It was always good to see you.
Aloha Bruddah!

Even though I hadn't seen you in over 40 years, I will miss you being in this world. I had hoped to see you here, but I guess I will have to wait now. We were high school sweethearts and married too young, I suppose, or it was the times; but I thought of you often through the years, though it was only recently that I realized how close you were living and entertained the idea of contacting you. But it wasn't meant to be. Ironicallly, I was leaving Chicago the day you left. You deserve all the love and admiration that has been given to you. You will be greatly missed by this California girl. You related to each one of us so individually while sharing that magnificent, searing, funny overall outrageous take on it all. Recalling driving SF to NYC with my young family in 1967, taking Ben to raucous movies in Chinatown, tireless energy for the Children's Theater at the Electric Circus, absorbing-reflecting through that 2x2 Mamiya-a unique shuffle of your feet then the so focused punchline.

Mike,
Though we never met, you were a great inspiration to me. I used to see your flash displayed in the store front windows all over San Diego and I told myself one day I'm going to paint like that. You inspired me to be a better machine builder, I liked your style "Rollo"
from chidhood to adulthood you've been the greatest inspiration in my life and my career as an artist and I thank you for that friend.

Aw,
Michael, I was just getting to know you again. When I met you, you were
Mike the Barber of Sausalito. You said "Pardon the profanity, but I'm a

& we ran & had a good chuckle.
Peace, bro.

Met Mike in '63 Lived next door in CA.It took off from there.Circum stances had us working together at Electric Circus where Tony Martin, Kieth Sykes, Gary White and others' inspirations gave focus to Mike's flying awe and enthusiasm for the marvels of life. It was up and down and all around the Village late '60's early '70's When with him, we got things done. I stopped getting haircuts from him when he switched to tatoos. I again lived next door to him when he came home all excited about these photos he took of this tatooed guy. And he kept going.

RIP Rollo. I got my 1st tattoo from Mike Malone when i was 18 years old. Ive had a few since then and i must say his is still my favorite even after 20 years. Ill never forget the 3 hours i spent with him in his shop in Austin TX that cloudy october morning.

I am deeply saddened by the lost of your loved one. At times like these it is comforting to know that the Bible tells us at Acts 24 verse 15 that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous. So with that knowledge, know that there is a hope that you will see your loved one again.

Rollie, what a great romp we had, huh?

Who'd a known, when we met in '80 that we'd touch each [other's lives] so much? What a kind, generous, and laugh-till-I-wet-my-pants man. You'll be in my heart forever.

My condolences to Kandi, Margaret, and Keith... and all the others grieved by this loss.

As one of the inky bozos who never got to meet Mike Malone,I can only guess at the distress felt by his many friends at this time.I am very sorry for your loss.
Not that it's much comfort, but as any tattooer will say-
Rollo Banks leaves the tattoo world infinitely improved by his presence, and thanx to his brilliant storytelling & concise, unmistakeable art he leaves a legacy that will continue to thrill and startle all with the sense to seek it out.He was the epitome of what thousands of tattooers aspire to be,and will be remembered, even by strangers like myself, with admiration & fondness.

I was privileged enough to get a couple tattoos from Mike in 1999 and 2000 in Burnsville, MN. When it is time for me to "check out," the joy of briefly being privy to Rollo's creativity will be one of those things that made sticking around worthwhile.

I met Michael in 1967 at the "Electric Circus" on St. Marks Place in New York City. He worked with Tony Martin's light show, and I did the sound and music, having recently left the defunct house band, "Circus Maximus". We stayed close friends for years, but after Austin, Texas, I lost track of him until today, quite by accident. Mike remains one of, if not the best friends I have ever had, one of the funniest, most intellegent, and insightful people I have ever known. Michael, I love you and I miss you. In the words of the late Kurt Vonnegut, "So it goes".

My right bicep bears a two-headed dragon in four colors that will always serve as my reminder of the craft and spirit of Mr. Banks/Malone. I knew when I got the tattoo that I was dealing with an individual who was truly that: individual. I'm sorry to hear of his passing, and my thoughts are with his family and friends.

I was fortunate enough to have Rollo cover my back in 1992 at the Roadway Inn near Koenig and I-35 when he was visiting town for SXSW. The best $1500 I ever spent in my life. Ten hours over three days of gut-busting anecdotes--few of which I can recall, unfortunately--as he laid in a death's head Virgen of Guadalupe. I was just a kid, but he treated me like a prince. He was one hell of a guy, and I regret that my encounter with him was so brief.

Daryl Janes

While I was exiled in NYC, Michael gave my first ink, a Chinese dragon. Tattoos weren't legal in NYC then (maybe not now), so I had to be screened by someone who knew us both. I talked to Michael before the session and he said "don't show up drunk, 'cause I don't do drunks." The world has lost a really good guy. God bless you, MIchael.

Steve Hendricks

Thanks Mike for making me feel welcome in Honolulu, for inviting me into the 'inner sanctum' of China Sea and for all the tips and tricks. Johnny said I'd probably be about as welcome opening a shop there as a 'rat in the refridgerator' but that wasn't the case. I enjoyed stopping by China Sea early in the mornings to find you sweeping the sidewalk or just puttering. Oh yea, you were ALWAYS my favorite tattooer and the work you did on me way back then still looks solid. See ya' down the road Mike!
