Stump, Reid, Marty, and Mina's folks:
My deepest condolences. For me, Mina was a good friend, a wonderful lawyer, and a very special person. She and I practiced law together for several years and we stayed in contact up until her last email to me, the day before her untimely, tragic death. She was a wonderful friend (and a loyal Democrat!), and I enjoyed working with her on many political, social, and community projects. As you know, she had extraordinary and inspiring drive, energy, and discipline. More importantly, as you also know, she had deep compassion and generosity, and would help anyone any time. She made the world a better place. We will miss her very much.

To the Akins/Brees Family,
News of the loss of Mina came as quite a shock. I worked with her for about 8 years at various law firms. She was able to give me a job when the company I worked for was closing because of bankruptcy. She was a powerful mentor for me in the legal field. Although I chose a different career, I always carry with me the lessons learned from her.
The last time I saw her, she was pounding the pavement in Round Rock while campaigning for the Court of Appeals. Since I had moved to Fort Worth and was only visiting for the weekend, this was a chance meeting and a wonderful one at that. I hope she was able to see how she had shaped my life and I was glad that she got to meet my family. I cannot begin to express the respect I have for her.
Drew & Reid, it was always a pleasure to assist Mina with picking you guys up from school and keeping you entertained at the office if necessary. I think back to those times and a warm smile fills my heart. I am thankful that I was able to be a part of her expansive life.
My warmest thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Virginia, Ray and Family,
I was never so shocked as today when Snooks called and told me about Mina Ruth's death. I was in Austin a few years ago and tried to contact her but I wasn't able to get through to her; it was during her campaign and I'm sure she was quite busy. I will always remember the summers at New Baden; I knew when ya'll got there, I would have someone to play with and hang out with. I will never forget the time Mina Ruth and I were catching crawfish out of the ditch in front of my house; we had a #2 tub about 1/3 full and we went in the house and Marty dumped them all back in. We got so mad at him; I don't know what we were going to do with them ourselves but it really irked us that he dumped them. From reading all the postings on this guest book, she evidently turned out to be a very wonderful person, but then I'm not surprised because she was a wonderful child also. Please know that our prayers are with you and yours.
Love,
Nancy Lou Prichard Stirl

We are terribly saddened to learn of Mina's death. So many times over the years we have laughed and enjoyed the many memories we had with Reid, Drew, Mina and Chip as the boys were friends from preschool on in Dallas with our son, Hollis...lots of spend-the-nights, birthday parties, riding in the convertible, etc. I treasure the last communication with Mina just a few years back when we caught up with one another and the kids.

My thoughts and prayers and with the family and many friends of Mina. What a shock to hear the sad news. My hope is that all of the good is remembered over the other raised in the recent past.
I offer the words of others now, for comfort and insight, as mine seem to fall short at a time like this:
"Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die."

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mina's family, and especially with Stump, her loving husband, and unsung hero. Mina had many crosses to bear, but she always took the high road and always brought such light and joy to those around her. Stump was her guardian on this earth, protecting her and keeping her laughing with his fabulous sense of humor. She was a loving mother, a giving wife, a nurturing friend, and an outstanding professional in her field of law.
Like many others who she shared her travel email and photos with, I felt I was there with her. The common theme in her travel pictures appeared to be "living a dream". Hopefully Stump will get in touch with her many students, young lawyers, and multiple new friends in Russia as they admired and respected the wonderful time she gave them mentoring and teaching them the Alternative Dispute Resolution process.
New Years will not be the same without our three-couple tradition, but we will continue to toast and roast Mina and her memory.
Mina, Linda, and I were planning a trip to France next year, but providing we still go, Linda and I will carry her in our hearts there and wherever, always. See you in Heaven, my dear friend, but hopefully not anytime too soon. Hugs, Nicki

Marty and Pam,
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Mina. Though my few times with her were limited to casual social encounters in Austin in the 70s, she was always very sweet to me and interested in my life. I had great respect for her. You and all of your family are in my and Tisha’s prayers.

Mina lived in Freer where her father coached and mother taught school from 1960 to 1964. Her mother was my English teacher in the 6th and 7th grade. I knew Mina well even though I was one year ahead. She was a great outgoing person and a great classmate and friend. The family is outstanding and my sympathy to them. The last I saw Mina in person was in 1968 when a friend of mine stopped to visit Mina and her family a few hours. We had a great visit even though her driving made us nervous. :) She was to leave for college soon. This last visit is how I remember her before she was to go to college. I did email her in 2006 wishing her well in her campaign and I got a nice email from her and she did remember me.
God Bless you Mina. We love you and your family. We lost you too soon.

I was a paralegal at the Dallas law firm where Mina practiced early in her career. I played racquetball with Mina on a couple of occasions and was totally dominated, of course, as Mina was very athletic and competitive :)! I also had the privilege of visiting her and Chip's home when Drew was a toddler and Reid a newborn. It was clear that Mina was bright and a go-getter, but she was also a kind and sincere person who took the time to notice and encourage me. My heart goes out to her family.
