Phillip Dunne Obituary

Phillip Kevin Dunne, 79, died on June 23, 2022 surrounded by family in his Austin home.

From an early age, Phil had a strong work ethic and drive. After graduating from the University of Texas in Austin, Phil worked as a surgical technician, teacher, and counselor before completing a master's degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. Phil then went on to a successful 29-year career at the Texas Medical Foundation where he worked his way up to CEO. Never one to sit still, he continued to work as a consultant in health administration even after retirement.

Phil's determination also drove him to succeed as an avid runner and biker. He competed in dozens of marathons, ultramarathons and triathlons with a tight knit crew of fellow athletes. Even when endurance events were no longer feasible for Phil, these longstanding friendships continued with regular verbal sparring matches over breakfast at IHOP.

Phil loved his family dearly, demonstrating his love through his daily actions – fixing problems big and small and bragging about his children and grandchildren to anyone who would listen. Friends, neighbors, waiters, doctors, nurses, and others were always treated to a summary of his family's latest accomplishments.

He especially loved his wife, Eileen, and considered her his greatest joy and dearest friend and partner. This was also made known to everyone around him.

Phil is preceded in death by his parents, Raye and Lillian Dunne; his brothers and sisters, Raye Dunne Jr, Barbara Richards, Susan Dunne, Dennis Dunne, Kathleen Dunne, Donna Dunne, and his daughter, Belin Dunne.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Eileen Dunne; his children, Michael Dunne and his wife Deniz Dunne, Tiffany Dunne-Oldfield and her husband John Oldfield, Colleen Wu and her husband Steve Wu, Kathleen Adams and her husband Steven Adams, and Ryan Buechner and his wife Rekiatu Buechner; his grandchildren, Jorge Davila, Michael Davila, Benjamin Adams, Morgan Adams, Evan Wu, Dylan Wu, and Temne Buechner; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, mentees, and coworkers he touched during his life.

A celebration of life will be held at Harrell Funeral Home (4435 Frontier Trail Austin, TX 78745) on July 6 at 4:00 pm followed by a reception at the family home. A funeral mass will be held at St Albert the Great Catholic Church (12041 Bittern Hollow, Austin, TX 78758) on July 7 at 11:00 am. Flowers are welcome.
