Robert Hearn Obituary

Robert L. Hearn III, 75, of Austin, Texas - devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, retired banker, and lifelong outdoorsman - died on Sunday, October 19, 2025. Affectionately known by many names over the years, including "Rambo," "Grambo," "H.P.," and "Mr. Clean," Robert was lively, sharp, passionate about his hobbies, and he loved his friends and family dearly.
A seventh-generation Texan, Robert was born in Beaumont, Texas to Elizabeth Tyrrell and Robert L. Hearn, Jr. Growing up in Beaumont, his love for hunting and fishing was set in motion early and would remain a lifelong passion. Robert attended Forest Park High School, where he enjoyed playing football and making trips to the beach with his surfboard in tow. That surfboard ultimately hung proudly in Pat Magee's Surf Shop in Port Aransas. He went on to attend The University of Texas at Austin, where he studied business, joined Phi Delta Theta fraternity, made countless lifelong friends, and graduated with honors. During those formative years, he also met and married the love of his life, Monica Hallahan.
Robert's favorite saying was "Work hard, play hard," and he lived it to the fullest. His banking career in Austin spanned over four decades, beginning at City National Bank in 1972 and concluding with his retirement from PlainsCapital Bank in 2016. He formed lifelong relationships across the city as an old-fashioned, conservative banker who thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the growth and development of Austin.
And when it came to "playing hard," Robert accomplished that with equal devotion. Calling him an avid outdoorsman might just be the understatement of the decade. If it were a fish, he wanted to catch it. If it were an animal, he wanted to hunt it. He spent many years fishing for red snapper and mahi mahi in the Gulf of Mexico with his friends and family aboard his boat, Mr. Clean. He also loved hunting deer, dove, quail, and turkey with his buddies. Cooking up his latest catch or game for friends and family was one of his greatest joys. Robert was an enthusiastic competitor in skeet shooting events and an active member of the Coastal Conservation Association of Texas, a cause close to his heart. He was known for pulling pranks on his friends, sharing stories of past escapades, tinkering away in his workshop, and looking for deals at Costco.
Robert was hugely blessed by his 53 years of marriage to Monica. His brother, Tyrrell, remembers thinking at their wedding, "Robert just made the best deal of his life!" When Robert referred to her as his angel, you knew that he was speaking from the heart. He meant it and so appreciated Monica's presence, guidance, and steadfast love.
God also blessed Robert with two beautiful, independent daughters, Missy and Catherine. They meant everything to him, and he was so proud of their lives, their achievements, and the families they had built.
In the later years of his life, Robert revealed a softer, more reflective side - one that drew his loved ones close and left an indelible impression. Words cannot describe how much we will all miss Robert's larger-than-life presence and lively spirit. We thank the Lord for the gift of Robert.
Robert is survived by his wife, Monica Hearn; his daughters and sons-in-law, Missy and LTC Chad Zinnecker, and Catherine and Andy Sanderson; his cherished grandchildren, Anna, Emery, Ellie, and Judd; his brother, Tyrrell Hearn and wife Suzanne; his sister, Ruthie Burrus and husband Gene, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private family service will be held on what would have been Robert's 76th birthday, Friday, November 14th. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home, 5416 Parkcrest Dr, Austin, TX 78731 Feel free to dress comfortably – Robert would.
