Robert Meyer Obituary

Robert Henry Meyer Robert Henry Meyer, 72, of Lakeway died June 24, 2013 with family and friends around him. Bob was born in Chicago, IL, to Julian and Alexa Meyer. Bob is survived by his wife Bonnie (Vogt); his brother Zachary Meyer of Hermosa Beach, CA; his daughter Melissa Braeger and her husband Chris Braeger, his son David Meyer and his wife Jenn Matheson, his step- daughter Bethany Parish and her husband Anthony Parish, his step-son Jeremy Brock and by his grandchildren Zeke, Alexa, Robert, Carson and Cassidy. Bob began his professional music career at age 14, graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, and attended Beloit College in Wisconsin. He received his master's degree at the University of Miami where he also began teaching music. Bob moved to Austin in 1978 to become the Director of the Jazz Studies program at the University of Texas. He soon joined the ever popular "Beto and the Fairlanes" in 1980 as a trumpet and alto sax player. Bob later used his unique business sense to start the music publishing company "Concept Publishing." His business sense was again tapped when Bob was hired as the first Music Liaison for the City of Austin in the 1980s at which time he was instrumental in advancing the new official city slogan "The Live Music Capital of the World." Bob is remembered as a cast musician for Ray Benson's stage production "A Ride with Bob: The Bob Wills Musical." His last job was as the secretary of the Austin Federation of Musicians where he worked until Dec, 2012. Throughout his career, Bob could be found performing at private events, bars, clubs, and restaurants, and he always supported fellow musicians in their careers. The Austin Jazz Society will honor the life of Bob Meyer, one of the all-time greatest jazz musicians in the history of the "Live Music Capital of the World," on July 14, 2013 from 5-9pm at Shoal Crossing Event Center in Austin, TX. A treasure of a man who identically confronted both challenges and opportunities - with verve, flexibility, and humor.

Bob was uniquely adept at modifying his trajectory, whether musically, as in his seemingly omnidirectional improvised intros to standards on the piano, or in life, as evidenced by his agile and periodic professional regenerations.

And, when unable to pivot, Bob addressed the circumstance with a wry smile and a simultaneously truthful, quixotic, yet humorous quip.

I will always cherish our years of stage time and, most of all, our cogent and ranging polemics as your final fermata ensued.

We will always listen, kind sir.

I am so sad to hear about Bob passing away. What a terrific guy and superb musician and arranger. I enjoyed playing music with him and being with him at the Las Vegas convention of the American Federation of Musicians. A loss to Austin, Texas; a loss to the music world. What a beautiful player and great guy. I only worked with Bob a couple of times, but every time I heard him play--and talked with him--I learned something new. Everyone who knew this remarkable man will miss him. I know I do, Ken George
