Roger BECK Obituary

BECK, Roger Samuel
Roger Samuel Beck, 84, passed away September 26, 2016. He was born on his family farm in Red Rock, Texas December 22, 1931.

Roger was raised in the Catholic faith. As an adult he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior and was ever grateful for the Lord's forgiveness and saving grace. In his later years, he returned to his Catholic roots.

He was known for his passion for Western Swing music and for over 60 years of cutting generations of hair.

He started his barbering career straight out of the Navy in December 1955 and celebrated his 60th Anniversary as a barber December 2015. He was meticulous and well-loved by the people he "traded with." His customers came to the shop as much for a story and a neck massage as they did a cut. He never hesitated to give a trim in the hospital or at a customer's home if they couldn't get to the shop. Every customer became a personal friend.

His second career was entertaining crowds with his Western Swing music. He sang, played rhythm and bass guitar, and knew how to keep a crowd on the dance floor. His first paying gig was playing an accordion for a family wedding at the age of 12, in 1943. When they handed him a few coins at the end of the wedding, he thought, "You mean I get paid for this?" This began a music career that spanned 72 years. He played on board his Navy ship while serving during the Korean War, also surprised that Uncle Sam would pay him to do what he loved. The highlight of his music career was playing the 1968 Worlds' Fair in San Antonio, HemisFair '68, with Barney Tall, whose friendship and musical skill he greatly treasured. For five months he would barber all week in Austin then jump in the car and drive to San Antonio to play weekend performances. Over the years he played in many bands: the Rockne Playboys, Barney Tall and the Tallboys, Roger Beck and the Buckaneers, the Allan Talley Band, the Stardusters, Roger Beck and the Western Swing, and others. His last gig was played just two months ago at Old Settler's Hall in Round Rock. He was inducted into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame in 2005.

Roger had a unique gift of turning everyone he met into a lifelong friend. He will be remembered as a great storyteller, faithful friend and a kind-hearted gentleman. He is dearly loved by his kids, his girls, his grandchildren and great grandchildren and by his lady friend of many years, Betty Goodrich.

The family offers their deepest gratitude and thanks to Roger's cardiology team of 30 plus years, Dr. David Morris, MD, Roberta Richards, FNP and the support staff of Austin Heart.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lucy Bartsch Beck, wife Margie Ferris Beck, former wife Alice Goertz Beck, and grandson Seth Bloomquist. He is survived by his sister Verena Frerich and the late Verlin Frerich, brothers Melvin Beck and wife Flora Mae, and Cleo Beck and wife Ann; children Robert Beck and wife Jaye, James Beck, Stephen Beck, Carolyn Parker and husband Charles, Judy Ambrose and husband Gary, Sabrina Phillips and husband Robert, Lisa Ross and husband Danny, Donna Meek and husband Craig, Robin Bloomquist and husband Larry, Wendy Miles and husband Chet, 23 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Roger asked that his musician friends serve as Honorary Pallbearers, represented by Ray Tesmer, Joe Chovanec, Paul Schlesinger, Sherman Lindsay, Walter Hutcherson, and Jim Brown.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from four o'clock until six o'clock in the evening, on Wednesday, the 28th of September 2016, at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas.

Funeral services will be conducted at ten o'clock in the morning on Thursday, the 29th of September 2016, in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM).

Our prayers are with you and your family. My mother was Irene Marie Beck. Her mother was Agnes Magadelina Beck who was married to Max Beck. Max and Robert were brothers. Roger must have been a wonderful man. Wish I could have known him. May the Lord be with you during this sad time in your life.

Roger and I played music together twice a week, sometimes more, from 2004 until 2015, when our dance club at the 29th & Lamar Recreation Center folded. I will always cherish those memories. I don't think too many gigs went by that Roger didn't mention something about "Back when I was with the Rockne Playboys...," Barney Tall, the 1968 Hemisphere in San Antonio, or dozens of other music-related stories. All those events happened before my time, though the way Roger recited them, I felt like I was there. Since I played the fiddle, Roger always fondly pointed out that I stood on stage at 29th St. where two of my fiddle-playing predecessors -- Ken Idaho and Cotton Collins -- stood before they passed away. I guess the inference was that I would be the next to drop! Roger was a good friend and I could always count on him when I needed a vocalist and guitarist. I will never forget the thrill of when me, Roger, and Ray Tesmer would sing 3-way harmony. Thank you Roger, for including me on so many of your later-day gigs, including this last one today. Goodbye, and Gold Bless.

To Bobby, Jimmy, Steven, Judy and Carolyn, so sorry for the loss of your father Roger, he was a kind and generous man, he will be missed dearly. Roger and your mom(Alice) would always come over to the house when dad had a party and your mom and dad would start singing and playing the piano. we all grew up together. I will always remember your parents with love. Your friend always. Frank Guerrero, special prayers tonight for your families and your special father.

Roger Beck is a big influence in my life. In 1967 Roger and Barney Tall were a duo that played several nights a week at the Split Rail on South Lamar. I was in law school at the time. Whenever Roger and Barney were playing I'd tell my wife Judy that I was going to the law library to study but I'd always wind up at the Split Rail, studying the music that those two fine musicians made on that small stage. To this day I've never heard two pickers and singers with such a great sound. One night a law school classmate of mine went up and told Roger and Barney that I played guitar and sang. Roger and Barney asked me to sing a song with them and that was the start of my life in Austin music. May the Lord watch over you, Roger, and your family and many friends. Peace

Roger was one of those few constants in life. Always smiling, telling stories and welcoming everyone by name. He was my dad's barber since 1960 and he gave me my first cut around 1980. When I ran into Roger around town, he was usually doing sometime amazing like giving haircuts to his customers that were unable to get to the barbershop. It was not uncommon to see two empty barber chairs and a half-dozen customers waiting patiently for Roger. I don't know if he had any actual customers because he treated everyone as friends. He not only knew everyone by name; he knew their job, family members, hobbies, the schools they attended etc. Roger will be missed. Gods blessing to everyone involved.

Our most deep condolences to all of Roger's children and entire family. Roger, what a guy ! He gave me my first haircut in Austin 60 years ago this month, later gave our son his first haircut, then later on he gave our grandson his first haircut. Roger has been more like a brother to me in many respects. He was a generous man, a fun loving man, and a sincere person. Our common participation in music was where we really became such friends. We, who knew him, have a big loss of a great friend. I met him when I was 18 years old just down from Midland to start school. God bless all of his relatives and loved ones.

Roger first started cutting my hair on Airport Blvd., when I was in the first grade. Then over to the shop on North Loop and also North Village. He also cut hair at my parents Nursing Homes, Twin Oaks, North Lamar and Anderson Lane. Luckily I got to see Roger perform one last time in Dec. 2015 at The Little Longhorn Saloon.
Rest in peace Roger, God speed my friend.
