Ronald GUINN Obituary

GUINN, Ronald Miller

Ron Guinn died at his home in Austin on July 2nd from Alzheimer's-related complications, following hip surgery, at the age of 82. He was a fourth-generation Texan, born in Houston on July 26, 1931, to RM Guinn and Frances Sloan Guinn. He is survived by his wife Ann; son, Michael Guinn, and his wife Nica and Ron's grandson, Gabriel RM Guinn, of Santa Barbara, CA; daughter, Melani Guinn, and her husband, Chris Ramey, of Everson, WA; and well-loved family that Ann brought into his life: stepson Brandon Jones, his wife Lela Rose, and grandchildren Grey and Rosey Jones of New York City; and stepdaughter Kim Kelley, her husband, Wes Kelley, and granddaughters Grace and Vivian Kelley of San Angelo, TX.

Ron was raised in Houston, graduated Lamar High School, attended Rice, and completed his mechanical engineering degree at the University of Texas at Austin in 1954. He worked for a short time at Dow Chemical in Freeport, then discovered his true vocation and earned his Master of Divinity at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, which began a long and joyful ministry.

Ron devotedly served churches in El Paso, Beaumont, Sugarland, Tyler and Junction, and held other leadership positions within the Presbyterian Church across Texas. Participating fully in these communities, he also volunteered in Rotary, Jaycees, and on various boards, while still finding time to coach Little League, sponsor scout troops and pursue his passion for golf.

After retiring, Ron and Ann moved to Austin and embarked on many world travels. Ron was an avid UT fan, enthusiastically supporting football, basketball, and baseball. He held membership on the Executive Committee of the Chancellor's Council, the President's Associates, Littlefield Society, and Longhorn Foundation and was a charter member of the Eyes of Texas Club, the UT Club, and the UT Golf Club. He also endowed the Ronald M. Guinn and Ann Bley Guinn Scholarship through the Texas Exes. In 2009, Ron and Ann moved to a villa at Longhorn Village where they found a wonderfully caring, fun, and talented group of new friends.

Ron will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his tender pastoral care, his love of a good party, his devotion as a husband, and his pride in being a Texan.

Ron requested that a party replace a traditional funeral. A "Celebration" of his life will be held at Longhorn Village in Austin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 26-Ron's birthday.
