Roy Rushing Obituary

Roy E. Rushing, age 80 died on August 7th, 2023 of heart and lung complications. He was born May 21, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas and raised in Alice, Texas as the eldest of 5 kids. Both his parents – E. D. and Dorothy Rushing were pharmacists who preceded him along with 3 of 4 brothers/sister – Scott, Cindy, Dean. The remaining brother, Dan lives in Mabelton, GA.

Roy graduated from William Adams High School in 1961 as quarterback in football, shooting guard in basketball (where he was All-District), a high and low hurdler and a mile relay runner in track (All-Regional). He also played center field in little league, pony league and senior teenage league baseball during the summers. He was an Eagle Scout and earned the God & Country Award from First Presbyterian Church who sponsored his scout troop/post activities. He had fond memories of Scout adventures camping, hiking & canoeing at Big Bend, Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, 1957 Jamboree in Valley Forge, PA, and at the Northern Tier Canoe Basin in Minnesota/Canada.

During his high school years, he was a Class Favorite, Class President, and member of the Key Club and graduated as one of the Top Ten. He then attended the University of Texas at Austin and Southwestern University in Georgetown — graduating with a BA in business/economics. At UT, he joined Phi Gamma Delta (FIJI) where he was the Lake Club Manager for 2 years.

Roy married Ruthann Bray on September 3rd, 1965 and had two daughters – Deirdre and Ali, who along with their husbands – Miguel and David ¬— gave Roy and Ruthann 5 grandchildren: Sara, Miguel & Ana Millan and Caroline & Katie Martineau. A blessing to Roy and Ruthann was that all returned to Austin/Lakeway after living in Spain, San Antonio, and Dallas initially.

Roy was a commercial banker for over 40 years in Austin with several banks- Capital Natl Bank, American Natl Bank, Horizon Bank, Compass Bank and Wells Fargo Bank and with Communication Specialists, Inc. Printing Company. He often said that several times in his career the only change that occurred was the name, the sign and stationery – several times he didn't even change desks. He served on numerous non-profit boards such as the Austin Nature Center, Brackenridge Hospital, Shoal Creek Hospital, Southwest Health Providers – HMO, Hospice Austin, Christopher House, Camp Fire, Crimestoppers, and Young Men's Business League.

In his free time, Roy loved his weekly tennis and racquetball games with dear friends and his annual trips to Edgewater and Colorado to ski and fish. He was an avid Texas Longhorn fan and a proud member of the Barnestormers. He loved spending time with his grandkids at their sporting events, performances, hunting trips and travels to Cuba, Mexico and the Bahamas.

Roy was loved by many and a loyal friend to all who knew him. He was the definition of a true Southern gentleman, a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to The Boy Scouts of America, www.scouting.org or Southwestern University, www.southwestern.edu/giving/

To the Rushing family. I offer my sincere and heartfelt condolences on the passing of Roy. I too am a member of the WAHS Class of 1961. I have fond memories of the ping pong games at Dubose Junior High. I met up again with Roy when I returned to Texas and needed a banker. That was almost 20 years ago. Over the years we exchanged emails and phone calls. We even did a little business. Our last text exchange was right before his 80th birthday. I always admired and respected Roy. He was a good man who lived a great life. May he rest in peace embraced by our Lord and Savior.

I graduated with Roy in 1961. However I know him best from the Boy Scout jamboree in 1957. We spend several weeks in close proximity and I enjoyed his company very much. My condolences go out to his family. Jim Harper

Roy and I were in the first grade together at the old Hobbs school where the Alice post office stands today. In those days it was hard to think of Roy Rushing without thinking of Roy Rogers. Roy would frequently wear a Roy Rogers shirt with fringe on the pockets and sleeves just like Roy in the movies. We were classmates and teammates on nearly every team mentioned in the obits including First State Bank in little league baseball. We played football and ran track for the Alice Coyotes. We have now lost fourteen of twenty-four of the seniors from that football team. Five are known to still be alive and five I can not account for. Roy was the best all-around athlete in our class of 1961. Roy was a really good friend (especially when I needed to borrow money). It is with sadness and regret that I learned of Roy's passing. There will be a remembrance of Roy Monday, August 28 from 4-6 at 2907 Navidad Cv. Austin Texas 78735
