Sandra Lay Obituary

Sandra Lay, RN, CHPN Sandy was born in Austin on November 20, 1958 and died in a car accident near her home in Bastrop on June 3, 2013. Sandy went to high school in San Antonio, but much of her childhood was spent in Afghanistan and Taiwan where she developed a strong interest in travel and meeting people from foreign lands. Some of her greatest memories were a trip she made with her grandmother to South Korea and several visits to orphanages in Russia. The last trip she made was a memorable cruise to Alaska with her mother Dorothy. Sandy was a compassionate, caring person. She had an early interest in animals and first obtained an Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology, working at the San Antonio Zoo before deciding that her true calling was in Nursing. She returned to school and got an Associate Degree in Nursing from ACC. She became a Registered Nurse and was intensely satisfied by that profession. Some of her greatest experiences and friendships were from working as a floor Nurse at Brackenridge Hospital, in Endoscopy at Seton, helping HIV/AIDS patients at Christopher House, and easing the passing of so many while at Hospice Austin (where she became a Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse). She grew close to so many of her coworkers, patients and their families. Sandy was a "friend of Bill W." and received a lot of support over the years from friends at Alcoholics Anonymous. Sandy is survived and mourned by her "Beloved Husband and Best Friend" Rodney Heathcott, her mother Dorothy and friend Vick, her Dad Homer, brother Ralph and his wife Suzette, brothers-in-law and their wives, nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is also survived by her beloved puppies "Mama's Angel Sophia Maloney Balony Pepperoni Weenie doggy O' Miney" and "Mama's Angel Abigail Ann", Kit Kat the cat, Gary the Goat, tortoises Scooter and Honeybee, and Snowflake the finch. She was preceded in death by Grandmother Ida Rebecca Lovelace, Grandmother Alice Cornelia Lay, Grandfather Lynn Lovelace, Step-Grandfather James Justiss, Grandfather Homer Lay, Father-in-law Rass Heathcott, and Mother-in-law Novine Heathcott, and friend Mark Rawlins. She was also preceded by numerous beloved pets, including many cats, ferrets, Giselle the goat, Buckwheat the duck, hedge hogs, guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rats, finches, cockatiels, fish, crabs, and turtles. She always missed Oliver "The Little Boy in a Cat Suit". The last year for Sandy had been one of pain and struggle with the debilitating disease Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, but she had been making an amazing recovery under the care of her nurse Brenda Masias. Sandy wanted to be cremated. A memorial service will be planned for the near future. A webpage with a guest book will be set up at www.allfaithsonline.com, where further details will be posted.

I am so sorry to finally find a way to get reconnected to the Lays, only to find that Sandra is no longer with you. Some people change the year, the day, the moment into sacred moments, into being truly present to the other, and we say it is their gift. It may be a gift, but receiving that gift is something sacred, for the receiver then becomes the giver, again and again, which sounds to me like what Sandra has done with her life. I am so sorry that I have not kept in touch, i lost my phone book info and I've never been able to figure out how to get such info-our phone books ( personal ones get lost , I lose a lot of things tempororaly or for months, years and then they surface. Now that I know how to find you, I hope I'll stay in touch Please accept my tary regrets in this time of grieving. I lost the phone book that had all my info so I was unable the last few years to connect. I tried to get it from Ralph through facebook which I rarely look at, but never did get an answer. You are all in my thoughtts and prayers. Much love, Betsy 6639 Chimineas Ave., Reseda, CA 91335 (By the way, I have a cognitive disorder-so I may get stuff mixed up.)

Sandy was a wonderful, compassionate and classy lady. She took care of my mom back in 1991 when my mom was under hospice care for lung cancer. And what a great help she was to our family! I also enjoyed hearing about Buckwheat the duck and her "zoo" (as she called it) back when I lived in Austin. Dorothy, my heart hurts for you and your family's loss. She was one of a kind and will be missed. I have only good memories of her..the best.

What a beautiful tribute to a unique, one of a kind human being. I was honored to be one of Sandy's partners in crime while we had her on this Earth. She could make me laugh and cry at the same time w/such intensity and this tribute to her memory did just that. she would be pleased. God I miss her.

Sandy was a wonderful nurse and a dear friend. I was privileged to work with her for about ten years, and I do mean it was a privilege. She had the ability to show incredible tenderness and compassion to patients and families, but she also had a wickedly funny sense of humor. Though she had many health problems of her own and often was in pain, she could always muster her beautiful, sweet smile and kind words for patients in need, and for animals. And she could always laugh! I am so very grateful that she was in my life, and I am better for it. Thank you, Sandy.

Although I have not kept in close touch, I always knew that whenever we would see each other, it would be a joyous event. I have so many memories of her over the years, and all revolve around much shared laughter. Sandy was a wonderful friend to humans, friend to all 4-footed beasties, and even creepy crawlies. I will miss her.

Condolences to the Lay Family. Sandra's kind attention to so many animals will not be forgotten. Proverbs 12:10 says God will blessed those taking care of his creation...Sandra will be remembered for the love shown.
