Stephen Davol Obituary

Stephen Critchlow Davol, of Louisville, Colorado, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Born April 24,1943, in Harlingen, Texas, to John and Dorothy Davol, Steve was the middle child and cherished brother to older sister, Betty and younger sister, Jackie. Steve spent most of his childhood years growing up in Austin, Texas, where his love for the outdoors and nature took root exploring the wooded areas close to home.
Steve ventured away from Austin to attend boarding school in Washington, Connecticut, at The Gunnery for three of his high school years. His time at The Gunnery was always dear to him, and he was relentless in his pursuit to persuade at least one child or grandchild to follow in his footsteps. Upon high school graduation, Steve continued his studies at the University of Texas, but ultimately would find his lifelong passion flying for Tenneco Oil and Gas for 31-years, captaining a variety of aircraft including the Falcon 20, Jetstar II, and Gulf Stream III.
In his later years Steve was nicknamed by his friends, "El Cheapo", for his thrifty spending habits. However when it came to others, he gave generously to local organizations, family, friends, and neighbors. While living in Austin, Steve volunteered countless hours with many organizations including the Settlement Home for Girls fixing donated computers, the AGE Computer Lab teaching computer skills to seniors, Quest group coordinating speakers for their lecture series, and Meals on Wheels driving weekly routes with Jill delivering meals to those in need. No matter the cause, Steve was dedicated to showing up and making a difference. He gave in big ways; as well as small ways and gestures.
Steve shared, in common with his father, a love for meeting people and asking about their lives. Always taking the extra time to inquire how someone was doing, learning a store owner's name, or simply offering friendly encouragement to his many friends and acquaintances. It was never about him, he was truly interested in others.
But perhaps the most important part of Steve's life was the 56 wonderful years of marriage he shared with his beloved wife, Jill Hohf Davol. Together they lived a life filled with family, friends, food and laughter. Family was essential to Steve and surely he was never happier than living his final days surrounded by family and blessed with calls, notes, and visits from friends he had made throughout his life. In addition to his wife, Jill, Steve is also survived by his children Amy Elisabeth (John Sheffield) of New Canaan, CT, and Trent Hohf Davol of Louisville; and his many grandchildren who were so dear to his heart, Sydney, Jack, Merritt, Paloma, and June.
Private services will be held for family and friends in Louisville, Colorado, and Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers the family requests acts of "paying it forward" through a donation to a local organization or a small gesture of kindness to those around you.
