Laura May Hastings, age 89, a 53-year resident of the Colville, Washington, area passed away on Aug. 24, 2021, at her home and surrounded by family.
Laura was born on May 3, 1932, in Roseburg, Oregon, the daughter of John and Mary (Rentonin) Haverinen.
She began grade school in Oregon and then moved with her family to Washington state where she graduated as the Valedictorian from Kent-Meridian High School in 1950.
On May 11, 1951, Laura married George Hastings in Kent. They attended the Church of the Nazarene in Kent and were actively involved.
Laura worked in the home and tended to the needs of her family as it grew in number to 10 children.
In 1968, they moved to Colville where she continued to care for her family while assisting on the ranch and keeping their business paperwork up to date. She devoted her full attention to her family with an occasional break to catch her breath, before diving back into the constant motion that filled their home.
She lovingly embraced each new grandchild and great-grandchild, making sure each one knew they were known and loved by her.
Laura was resourceful and could stretch a dime into a dollar as well as creating meals to fill her family from the farm, garden and livestock. She let nothing go to waste and if there was a need, it never went wanting.
Laura led her life in prayer and scriptures. She read her Bible until the binding of the pages were loose and lacking in ability to hold together.
Laura lifted her needs in prayer with an unending faith and confidence in God's goodness. Her heart was full of gratitude, her character was selfless and her kindness without falter or fail. She loved her family and was an example of resilience and patience. She was grounded in the joy of life's simplest gifts.
Laura was preceded in death by her husband, George; daughter, Sandy Ayars and her siblings, John Haverinen and Edna Benzel.
She is survived by nine children, Cathy Ayers (Dana) of Shelbyville, Indiana, Ben Hastings of Spokane, Washington, Gary Hastings (Wendy) of Colville, Janet Nelson (Jay) of Moses Lake, Washington, Marty Hastings (Felina) of Colville, Nancy Sliman (Pete) of Colville, Dan Hastings (Danel) of Colville, Ron Hastings (Amy) of Colville, Patty McLean (Jason Harkness); 32 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friendships.
The graveside service for Mrs. Laura May Hastings was held on Friday, Aug. 27, 2021, at the Mountain View Park Cemetery in Colville. Pastor Dennis Wilkening officiated.
