Mildred Sheehan of Colville, Washington died Oct. 10, 2021, at her home in the company of two of her children.
Mildred Teresa Shelter was born Oct. 14, 1923, in Rochester, New York, to Walter and Martha (Kehrig) Shelter. She married Robert Sheehan in Rochester on Aug. 8, 1942.
The couple lived in Rochester and, as the family grew, they moved out to the suburb of Chili, New York, eventually leaving the state to move to Anaheim, California, and then on to Kenmore, Washington, before retiring to Colville in 1991.
They were married 72 years before Robert died in 2015.
Mildred was employed in California by the Orange County Health Department, and by the King County Personnel (HR) Department once the family moved to Washington State.
Mildred was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, frequently serving as an officer, the Good Sam's Club, and the Aladdin Homemaker's Club.
Mildred and her daughters loved to quilt; they would gather on the weekends and quilt for hours on end. Many of their quilts were donated to the Veterans Hospital and other local family support organizations.
In recent years, she enjoyed her morning coffee in her recliner listening to dearly loved piano music recorded by her son Michael.
Mildred looked forward to each Spring when the seasonal creek ran through the yard and she was able to sit out on the deck listening to it babble while watching the hummingbirds.
Despite her failing eyesight Mildred still enjoyed playing card games with her family several times each week.
She was blessed to have dear friends that kept in touch via phone calls or sending thoughtful cards in the mail. Their mutual support was particularly important this past year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Kenneth; her sister, Phyllis Kudas; three of her daughters, Lillie Fontaine, Suzanne Sheehan, and Sheila Sheehan; and daughters-in-law, Denise Sheehan and Mary Sheehan.
She is survived by eight of her children: Peigi Sheehan, Bob Sheehan (Wanda Williamson), Michael (Michelle Sparks-Smith) Sheehan, Teresa Sheehan, Barbara (Kevin) Korsmo, Gary Sheehan, Kathleen O'Sheehan, and Dezana Aman; 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
